BLACK SCREEN: The voice of ALEX(18) and DOCTOR WALKER (late 30's), are the only voices that can be heard. ALEX I've told you a thousand times, I can't remember anything. DOCTOR You have to try harder, this is important, is there anything you can remember? FADE IN: A psychologist office, very relaxing colors and the faint sound of classical music can be heard in the background. ALEX Its hard for me to just remember things, it usually just happens. DOCTOR Okay then, we'll have to sit here until it happens. Try to describe it to me as it happens. SMASH TO CUT: EXT. PLAYGROUND - MORNING FLASHBACK: Its the last week of school before summer break and kids are on the playground before class starts in the morning. Kids in 1-4 grade are running around playing on the swings and on the other typical school playground equipment. ALEX and her friend JESS are playing on the monkey bars swinging upside down and goofing off. Its an unusually calm June day, no wind, no clouds and not a lot of cars on the roads. The bell for class rings and kids start to yell and run towards the doors of the school. ALEX and JESS walk in at a normal pace and continue talking while heading towards the building. (more) WHILE HANGING UPSIDE DOWN: JESS So what are you doing after school? ALEX Soccer was canceled because of the rain last night, you want to come over and go in the pool? JESS I'll have to ask my mom when she comes to pick me up. Jess opens the door to the school and lets Alex walk in first. INT. SCHOOL HALLWAY - MORNING Kids are scrambling to get to their classes in the hallways. WHILE TURNING TOWARDS JESS: ALEX Alright, I'll wait for you by the flag pole and I'll ask her with you. JESS K, see you later. Alex and Jess do a simple handshake that they made to "be unique." SMASH TO CUT: INT. PSYCHOLOGIST OFFICE - NIGHT THUNDER and LIGHTING light up the office. Its now raining outside and it is 8:40PM. ALEX is still sitting on the couch at the psychologist's office completely zoned out. DOCTOR WALKER pats ALEX on the shoulder to get her back into focus. Alex turns her head towards the Doctor and stares with a blank expression. DOCTOR Alex, I think its time for you to go. At least we know that you are able to gain some kind of memory back. That's good enough for now. Alex looks at the clock without making a sound. Alex gets up and gets her coat off of the coat rack. Doctor Walker opens the door for Alex and they walk down the hallway towards the main entrance. INT. PSYCHOLOGIST WAITING ROOM - NIGHT ALEX opens the door and looks up at the sky. Its raining heavily and the thunder and lighting is nearly constant. ALEX Doctor, could you give me a ride home? I'm not really sure if its safe to walk in this storm. DOCTOR Of course, just give me a second to grab my coat and keys, I'll be right back. You can take a seat. Alex cracks a small smile and looks around at the empty waiting room. She slowly walks towards a seat near the window and sits down. There is water dripping down the glass window next to her. Alex becomes hypnotized by the water droplet on the window and goes into another zoned out state of mind. ZOOM INTO WATER DROPLET: EXT. ALEX'S BACKYARD - AFTERNOON ZOOM OUT OF WATER DROPLET ON WATER GLASS: FLASHBACK: ALEX and JESS are in Alex's pool on the same day as the previous flashback. KIETH, Alex's brother (15), is sitting by the side of the pool listening to his iPod reading an ESPN magazine. Alex's parents, TOM (38) and SHERYL (35) and Jess's parents, HANK (37) and AMY (35) are at the pool side table having a few beers. Its still unusually quiet and not a lot of noise. Barking between two neighborhood dogs can be heard in the background, but very faintly. The most noise is coming from the splashing and laughter of Alex and Jess in the pool. WHILE STRUGGLING TO GET ONTO A TANNING RAFT: JESS Come get on this with me Alex! We can pretend we are on a cruise for rich people! ALEX Okay! Alex tries to climb on the raft with Jess and eventually gets onto it but then the raft tips over. The two girls surface and begin to laugh hysterically. KIETH Ha, way to go loser, you sunk your fabulous cruise ship. ALEX Shut up Keith! Alex tries to splash Kieth but fails to reach him. Kieth laughs then gets up and goes inside through a sliding door. PAN TO PARENTS AT THE TABLE: All the parents have at least one empty beer sitting in front of them on the table. TOM has one in his hand and so does Sheryl. Amy is reading a summer fashion magazine and constantly flipping back and forth between pages. HANK and TOM get up and leave the table to sit on the steps in the pool. HANK Look at our two little girls man, remember when we were that small? TOM I remember you being that small, I've always been more built then you. Even when we were that young. There is a silence between the two men and they look at their girls. ALEX and Jess are on donut-tubes just floating around on the far end of the pool. HANK Do you think they'll grow up and do what we did? TOM What did we do? HANK Grow up, move right down the street from each other and have the same life we are. TOM Yeah, I wouldn't-- Alex overhears them and interrupts the two father's: ALEX Of course daddy, except, Jess and I are going to live in the same house. We're best friends! ALEX Yeah, lets go, thanks. EXT. PARKING LOT - NIGHT Thunder and lighting is still going and the rain is coming down harder then before. Alex and the Doctor can be seen running towards his car, a 2009 Corvette, its one of two cars in the lot. The second car is a JANITOR's car, who can be seen taking garbage out. WHILE RUNNING PASSED THE JANITOR IN THE STORM: DOCTOR Have a good evening Harry! JANITOR You too sir, drive safe! The both reach the car and get inside in a hurry to avoid getting drenched from the rain. INT. DOCTOR WALKER'S CAR - NIGHT Red Corvette with black leather interior. A beaded bracelet that looks like it was made by a little kid hangs from the rear view mirror. The sound of the powerful engine can be heard when he starts the car. They pull out of the parking lot and start driving down the road only to get stuck at a light at an intersection. ALEX looks at the bracelet and begins to zone in and out. ALEX Did your daughter make that for you? DOCTOR Yes, she did. She gave it to me for my birthday. Doctor Walker looks at Alex for a couple of seconds then looks back at the traffic light. The light turns green and they continue heading down the road. ALEX I have something just like that...see? Alex pulls up the sleeve of her rain coat and sees a pink and green beaded bracelet with her name spelled out on the beads. DOCTOR That's very nice, do you remember who gave it to you? She plays with a couple of beads and examines them, then pulls her sleeve back down. ALEX No, sorry. Rain is hitting the roof of the car and lighting flashes. EXT. ALEX'S DRIVEWAY/FRONT OF HOUSE - NIGHT The car pulls into the driveway and the car turns off. ALEX and DOCTOR WALKER get out of the car and run up to the front porch of Alex's house. WHILE FLIPPING HER WET HAIR BACK: ALEX Thank you so much for the ride Doctor. DOCTOR No problem Alex, anything for a patient. Alex gives Doctor Walker a hug and opens the door to her house. DOCTOR (CONT'D) Do you mind if I come in and talk to your parents? ALEX Sure. A FEW MINUTES LATER: INT. DOCTOR WALKER sits down in a chair at the end of a medium-sized rectangular table. Thomas is sitting in the seat next to him with his hands folded. DOCTOR Mr. Stevens, I have a few questions about Alex, I hope you don't mind. TOM No, no, not at all. DOCTOR Alright then. Alex has been having flashbacks. TOM Of what? DOCTOR Something that doesn't seem like much to me, but you might be able to shed some light on this for me. TOM I'll try to do whatever I can. WHILE TAKING OUT HIS NOTEBOOK: DOCTOR One of her flashbacks was of her and some other little girl. WHILE OPENING HIS NOTEBOOK AND SEARCHES THROUGH THE PAGES: DOCTOR (CONT'D) I believe her name was Jess? TOM Jess, Jessica Maddern? She's been gone for years. DOCTOR What do you mean she's been gone for years? CUT TO ALEX'S BEDROOM: INT. ALEX'S BEDROOM - NIGHT ALEX is sitting at her bed spaced out again. She slowly turns her head towards her open closet and sees a brown shoe box that she didn't remember having. Alex slowly gets up and walks to the closet and grabs the box. Alex pulls out a picture of herself and Jess hugging each other at the beach. ALEX Oh my God, that's the girl from my flashbacks.
