FADE IN on a grainy montage of happy, attractive teenagers as
they pile into series of vehicles. PAN ACROSS the posh
downtown as it changes to suburbia and changes once more to
lush wilderness. FOCUS ON the sun in the sky as it gradually
sinks into the horizon, behind an endless sea of cornfields.
INT. ROGER'S CAR - NIGHT
Minimalist indie rock plays softly on the radio. BETTY,
pretty and with blonde hair, plays a game on her iPhone in
the passenger seat. Her boyfriend ROGER, a scruffy dark
haired youth, is driving.
BETTY:
How much longer will it be, baby?
It feels like we've been crammed in
here all day.
ROGER:
Almost there. KIRK said that it'd
be worth the drive.
BETTY:
I don't really trust Kirk.
Remember Spring Break last year?
ROGER:
That was a fiasco. Let's just give
him one more shot. He used to be
my brother.
BETTY:
Stepbrother.
FOCUS ON the taillights of Kirk's jeep as the sun fades and
darkness falls on the woods.
INT. KIRK'S JEEP - NIGHT
KIRK, a clean-cut teen with dark hair, frantically adjusts
his GPS while his sexy brunette girlfriend, JANET and her
cute but nerdy friend COLLEEN gossip.
COLLEEN (O.S.):
You're kidding.
JANET:
Nope. All over her face. The
first date, too, I didn't know that
the principal's daughter was into
facials of the organic kind.
KIRK:
Fuck, fuck, fuck.
JANET:
What's wrong, hon?
KIRK:
I think I'm lost.
JANET:
Are you serious? Isn't that what a
GPS is for? You know, to prevent
this sort of thing?
COLLEEN (O.S.)
You should've taken a left.
KIRK:
Huh?
Colleen reaches from the backseat and makes a few adjustments
on the GPS.
COLLEEN:
See here? You should've taken a
left on 220. This route should
still get us here, though. Too
late to turn back.
JANET:
And here we were, trusting you with
our lives for yet another weekend
of unforgettable fun in the sun.
Thanks, Colleen.
KIRK:
Yeah...Thanks.
INT. ROGER'S CAR - NIGHT
Betty's game on her phone is interrupted when the name JERK
starts flashing.
BETTY:
Your brother's calling?
ROGER:
Is he? Your phone must get better
reception. Answer it.
BETTY:
Yes?
KIRK (V.O.):
Yo. Bad news.
BETTY:
You don't say?
KIRK (V.O.):
I missed the turn about ten miles
back. But I rerouted the--
JANET (V.O.)
Colleen!
KIRK (V.O.):
Right, Colleen rerouted the GPS so,
we should make it within a half
hour.
BETTY:
Shouldn't we have already made it
to this crummy place? If I'd known
it was going to be Spring Break all
over again, I would've--
Suddenly, a loud SMASH is heard and Betty drops her phone.
ROGER:
What the fuck was that?
BETTY:
I don't...
FOCUS ON Betty's face as it turns from bewilderment to sheer
horror when she looks through the rearview mirror. The third
car filled with their friends, the one behind them, has
crashed into a giant steer.
BETTY: (CONT'D)
Oh, my fucking God!
ROGER:
What? What is it?
BETTY:
It's STEVE and SAMANTHA! Oh, fuck!
Stop the car!
EXT. WILDERNESS - NIGHT
Betty and Roger rush over to the crumpled remains of their
friends' vehicle. Kirk, Janet, and a traumatized Colleen
hurry to the scene.
BETTY:
Steve! Samantha! Are you alright?
ROGER:
Fuck me. Where did that bigass cow
come from?
COLLEEN:
Steve?! Steve?! Oh, God!
Someone, call an ambulance! Steve,
are you alright?!
Colleen rushes to the car to check on her brother and his
girlfriend, but Kirk grabs the hood of her jacket.
KIRK:
I'll check.
JANET:
Here, hon, it's okay. It's okay,
calm down.
INT. STEVE'S WRECKED CAR - NIGHT
Kirk peeks his head through the smashed window and grimaces
at what he sees. Steve's face is plastered into the steering
wheel, his entire mouth busted open. Samantha is crumbled at
an impossible angle in the passenger seat. Kirk sighs and is
about to leave when Samantha SPRINGS TO LIFE, SCREAMING AN
UNNATURAL HOWL.
SAMANTHA:
HELP ME! HELP ME! HELP ME!
KIRK:
Whoa! Fuck!
EXT. WILDERNESS - NIGHT
Colleen breaks free from Janet's embrace and rushes to the
car, hoping to see her brother alive. When she pushes Kirk
aside and sees Steve's corpse, she goes into hysterics.
KIRK (TO JANET:)
Won't you please take her the fuck
away?! She doesn't need to see
this!
Janet nods and takes Colleen back to his jeep. Betty gives
Kirk a long hard look and returns to Roger's car.
KIRK (TO ROGER:) (CONT'D)
Are you gonna just stand there like
a limpdick or are you gonna help me
get her out of there?
ROGER:
Huh?
KIRK:
She's a-fucking-live, Einstein.
Lend your brother a fucking hand!
Roger suddenly springs to action and rushes to Kirk's side.
The two of them manage to pry a shaken and bruised Samantha
out of the wreckage. She falls back into hysterics when they
have to drag her over Steve's corpse.
EXT. WILDERNESS - NIGHT
The friends have gathered outside of Kirk's jeep. Janet sits
in the backseat with the door open. Colleen and Samantha are
wrapped in a blanket beside her, clearly spent. The others
stand together outside the half-open door.
ROGER:
What I wanna know is, where did
that fucking massive steer come
from? These woods are as dense as
shit.
BETTY:
Is that seriously all you can think
about? Steve is fucking dead! Who
gives two shits about a goddamn
cow?
COLLEEN:
Oh, Steve!
Colleen and Samantha both return to hysterics and Janet gives
Betty a cold look.
BETTY:
Fuck. What a fucking terrific
weekend this is turning out to be.
I should've stayed home. We
should've all stayed home. This is
your fault, Kirk.
Betty storms off down the road.
ROGER (O.S.):
Where are you going?!
BETTY:
Don't follow me! I'm not in the
motherfucking mood right now!
Betty is about to hop back in the passenger side of Roger's
car when she looks back at the smoldering mess that was once
Steve's car. It looks like a crumbled ball of foil, still
smoking, the giant longhorn that caused the collision now
little more than a pile of guts. Betty peers over her
shoulder, sees Roger and Kirk and Janet still talking amongst
themselves, and slowly heads further down the road to Steve's
wrecked car. Betty grimaces when she notices just how
disgusting the steer's corpse is up close. She slowly
maneuvers around the vehicle, curious to see what it looks
like inside. Just as she peeks in the window, a look of fear
sweeps over her face.
BETTY: (CONT'D)
Wh-what the hell?
ROGER (O.S.):
Did you find something?
BETTY:
Guys? What did you do with the
body?
KIRK (O.S.):
What the fuck are you talking
about?
INT. STEVE'S WRECKED CAR - NIGHT
In the crumbled driver's seat, where Steve's corpse was once
smashed into the steering wheel, lie a single baby pacifier.
Betty slowly reaches for it and holds it close to her face,
examining it in disbelief.
EXT. WILDERNESS - NIGHT
BETTY:
The body. Steve's body. It's not
here anymore.
Kirk and Roger run over and look inside.
KIRK:
What the fuck? Where the hell did
it go?
Roger holds Betty close and looks at the now ominous-looking
forest that surrounds them.
BETTY:
Th-this was inside. This was all
that there was.
Kirk grabs the pacifier from Betty's hand and looks at it.
It's cheap and yellow. Up close, it looks old. Kirk's
nostrils flare and he hurls the pacifier into the trees and
yells in rage.
KIRK:
Are you fucking with me, God?! Are
you?! What the fuck do you want
from me?!
A baby begins to cry in the woods. The fear is apparent on
all of their faces.
BETTY:
M-maybe we should go.
ROGER:
Good idea.
JANET (O.S.):
Baby? Are we leaving soon?
KIRK:
Yeah, get in the jeep.
JANET (O.S.):
Great, 'cause I don't wanna be in
these creepy woods for one more--
Suddenly, Janet SCREAMS, soon followed by the screams of
Colleen and Samantha. Betty, Roger, and Kirk all look in
horror as MR. SMILEY, a man with a potato sack with a crudely
drawn smiley face, plunges his axe into Janet's back. He
begins hacking AGAIN AND AGAIN. Betty screams.
KIRK:
Oh, God, no! No, no, no! Janet!
You motherfucker! You fucking
motherfucker, I'll kill you!
Kirk runs down the road towards Mr. Smiley, intent on saving
Janet, but it is already too late. She lie dead on the
forest floor in a pool of blood. Mr. Smiley continues
hacking at her corpse. Betty and Roger make a mad dash for
their car. Roger hops in and puts the car in drive but Betty
stays outside just long enough to see Kirk attempt to tackle
Mr. Smiley, only to get his fingers lobbed off with a single
axe swing. Betty screams.
ROGER:
Get the fuck in, Betty!
Betty hops in and slams the door. Her and Roger watch in
disbelief as Mr. Smiley lifts his axe in the air and swings
it down right in the middle of Kirk's face, killing him.
INT. KIRK'S JEEP - NIGHT
Colleen is crying hysterically as she slams the back door and
lunges into the driver's seat. Mr. Smiley gets up from the
two corpses that stain the forest floor with profuse amounts
of blood and swings his axe at her, but she slams the
driver's door just in time.
COLLEEN:
Fuck you, you fucking crazy piece
of shit!
SAMANTHA:
Oh, God, hurry!
Colleen throws the car into drive and rushes down the forest
path at breakneck speed, with Roger close behind. Mr. Smiley
swings his axe around and spins in a circle as both vehicles
speed down the road.
INT. ROGER'S CAR - NIGHT
Betty tries desperately to call for help but she is shaking
so badly that she keeps dropping the phone onto the
floorboard.
BETTY:
Wh-what the fuck was that? What
fucking happened back there?
ROGER:
I don't fucking know. Kirk's dead.
Janet's dead.
BETTY:
Steve's dead. Where did his body
go?
ROGER:
That lunatic must've done something
with it. Can you get a hold of
anyone?
BETTY:
Trying.
OPERATOR (V.O.):
911, what is your emergency?
BETTY:
Yes, you've got to help us. We're
on Farm Road 35, just off 220.
Please, help. Three of our friends
are dead.
Before Betty can say anything else, a sharp slashing sound
cuts through the air. FOCUS ON her eyes as she looks around
until they widen with terror. A GIANT BUTCHER'S KNIFE PUSHES
ITSELF THROUGH THE BACK OF ROGER'S SEAT, STABBING THROUGH HIS
HEART. Blood pours from his mouth as he goes into
convulsions, losing control of the vehicle.
OPERATOR (V.O.):
Ma'am? Ma'am, are you there?
You're breaking up. Hello? Ma'am?
Betty SCREAMS in absolute terror as the knife withdraws from
Roger's chest and BABYDOLL, a woman with a creepy china doll
mask, emerges from the backseat. She swings for Betty and
Betty drops the phone and kicks at Babydoll until the car
ventures off the embankment. Both women are flung about the
car as it spins down the hill. Betty screams the whole way
until the car ends at the bottom of the hill, in the densest
part of the woods.
INT. ROGER'S WRECKED CAR - NIGHT
When Betty comes to in a daze, the first thing she notices is
that the car has landed at an odd angle. Her side of the car
is blocked by the ground, and the driver's side of the car is
blocked by Roger's dead body slumped over in the driver's
seat. The tears begin to well up in her eyes.
BETTY:
Fuck. Roger.
Betty reaches out to stroke his face, but suddenly Babydoll
bursts from the backseat, swinging her massive blade. Betty
screams and claws at Babydoll while trying to unfasten her
seat belt.
BETTY: (CONT'D)
Oh, God! Oh, God, please!
Babydoll keeps slashing at Betty, making small slashes all up
and down her arm. Finally, Betty manages to get free and
punches Babydoll right in the face. Then she starts to climb
out through the sunroof. Babydoll swings at her legs but
Betty kicks her and pulls herself through just in time.
INT. KIRK'S JEEP - NIGHT
Colleen is driving like a bat out of hell, occasionally
eyeing the GPS for the nearest route to civilization.
SAMANTHA:
Oh, no.
COLLEEN:
What is it?
SAMANTHA:
They're not behind us anymore.
COLLEEN:
Huh?
SAMANTHA:
Roger and Betty. They're not
there. Do you think that guy with
the axe could've...?
COLLEEN:
No, he was on foot. There's no
way.
Suddenly, Colleen's eyes flash with terror when SOMETHING
FALLS THROUGH THE WINDSHIELD, SMASHING IT TO BITS. Colleen
and Samantha scream in unison and the jeep comes to a
screeching halt. When Colleen realizes that it is Steve's
corpse that had been flung through the windshield and he is
staring up at her with his dead eyes, she screams again.
EXT. EMBANKMENT - NIGHT
Betty runs through the dense woods like a madwoman, clutching
her bloody arm and not looking back once to see if Babydoll
is following. When she hears the screams of Colleen and
Samantha from far away, she stops to listen.
BETTY:
Colleen and Samantha!
Betty begins to run in the direction of the screams but
screams herself when Babydoll flings herself into her from
out of nowhere, knocking them both down. Betty screams and
struggles, but Babydoll manages to pin her down. She lifts
her knife high up into the air but Betty punches her off and
gets back on her feet to find her friends.
INT. KIRK'S JEEP - NIGHT
Colleen is shaking violently while she tries to start the
jeep, even with Steve's corpse sprawled out on the dashboard.
SAMANTHA:
Please. Colleen. You have to get
us out of here.
COLLEEN:
What the fuck do you think I'm
trying to do?
SAMANTHA:
Oh, God. His body. I can't look
at it! I can't stand it anymore.
Samantha jumps out of the backseat and runs down the road a
little ways.
COLLEEN:
S-Samantha! Stop it! You can't go
alone! It's not safe out there!
Colleen hurries after Samantha and the two of them stand a
little ways in front of the jeep, both clearly distraught.
SAMANTHA:
How in the hell did that happen?
How in the hell did Steve's body
wind up here?
Colleen looks up at the tree branches that stretch across the
night sky like fingers.
COLLEEN:
They're watching us.
SAMANTHA:
Wh-who is? Who's watching us?
COLLEEN:
Whoever's doing this to us. I've
got a bad feeling about Roger and
Betty.
SAMANTHA:
Oh, God. Colleen, what are we
going to do?
Just as Colleen begins to speak, Betty emerges from the
woods, scaring both girls into screams.
BETTY:
It's just me. Roger's dead.
SAMANTHA
What?
BETTY:
There was some girl with a doll
mask. She had a knife. She was
hiding in the backseat. If only
I'd have known, I'd...
Betty starts to cry and Colleen hugs her. Samantha steps
forward to join the hug but a loud snap sounds out and she
stops in her tracks. Betty and Colleen look at Samantha in
disbelief as the large circle of blood begins to form on her
blouse. She's been shot. When she falls to her knees, Betty
and Colleen see the culprit standing in the woods behind her.
Amongst the streets stands STARLET, with blonde hair and the
mask of a glitzy Hollywood actress and a red dress, her gun
still smoking. She fires a few more rounds at the girls and
they retreat to another section of the woods.
EXT. WILDERNESS - NIGHT
Betty and Colleen run through the forest as fast as they can.
Starlet fires more rounds at them, narrowly missing them.
The girls scream and run through their exhaustion until they
finally make it to a clearing.
EXT. FARMLAND - NIGHT
Betty and Colleen stop for a moment to catch their breath and
check out their surroundings. In the distance they spot a
cornfield and just beyond that, a barn with a farmhouse.
Colleen adjusts her glasses.
COLLEEN:
Do you see that? Do you think
anyone's home?
BETTY:
The lights are on.
The sound of more gunfire coming from the woods alerts the
girls and they hurry off towards the cornfield.
EXT. CORNFIELD - NIGHT
The girls are strangely cautious as they move through the
maze of corn. Halfway through they lose each other.
BETTY:
Colleen! Colleen, where are you?
COLLEEN:
Over here!
BETTY:
Where?
Suddenly, Mr. Smiley bursts through the corn and swings his
axe at Betty, barely missing her. She SCREAMS. Betty runs
like hell through the cornfield and comes out on the other
side. What she sees alarms her. The dead bodies of at least
a dozen decapitated goats are sprawled across the ground.
She covers her mouth and runs a little ways closer to the
barn. When she hears a chainsaw roar to life, she turns
around and looks at the cornfield. Just as Colleen emerges
from the cornfield unscathed, GOATHEAD, a man with a chainsaw
wearing a severed goat's head, appears behind her. Colleen
turns just in time to scream as Goathead's chainsaw slices
her head clean off her shoulders. Betty screams and runs
towards the farmhouse.
EXT. FARMHOUSE - NIGHT
Betty bangs on the front door over and over, screaming for
someone to come, but it is no use. She looks over her
shoulder and sees Goathead and Mr. Smiley running towards
her. She screams and runs around the deck of the farmhouse
to a side window. She quickly looks in and notices how
eerily quiet it is inside. She takes off her shoes and busts
the window open and crawls through, barely missing Goathead's
chainsaw that cuts off part of the ledge. Betty screams.
INT. FARMHOUSE - NIGHT
BETTY:
Hello?! Is anyone home?! Please,
help me! I'm being attacked!
Betty runs through the dining room and into the kitchen,
where she arms herself with a knife. She notices a telephone
nearby, mounted by the back door, and runs for it. When Mr.
Smiley axes through the back door she screams and swings a
knife at him. Goathead emerges in the kitchen with his
chainsaw and she hurls the knife at him, but it misses.
Betty screams and runs into the living room, where she sees
Babydoll has begun stabbing through the front door. Betty
grabs a portable phone from beside the staircase and runs up
the stairs. When she runs by a window, it gets shot out, the
bullet just barely missing her. She screams.
Upstairs, Betty locks herself in the first room she comes to.
When she turns around she sees the dead body of an old farmer
couple lying in their bed and covers her mouth. The bodies
had been gutted long before and have now begun to rot. She
feels like vomiting but manages to keep it in. The loud
forboding stomps sounding up the stairway alert her and she
dials 911 once again, just before the lights go out.
BETTY: (CONT'D)
Fuck! Oh, my God. What am I gonna
do?!
When Mr. Smiley begins axing through the bedroom door, Betty
hurries into the adjoining bathroom and locks herself in
there. She looks through all the drawers in search for a
makeshift weapon but finds nothing. When Mr. Smiley starts
to axe through the bathroom door, she opens the shower
curtain and gasps at the stew of several rotting dead bodies,
apparently babies. She vomits all over the floor. Soon Mr.
Smiley is halfway through the door and begins to unlock it.
Betty screams and steps into the rotting pool of murdered
babies, wincing in disgust. As Mr. Smiley bursts through the
bathroom door, Betty punches through the narrow rectangular
window and forces herself through just in time, before Mr.
Smiley swings his axe out the window. Betty falls two
stories through the night air, screaming all the way.
EXT. FARMHOUSE - NIGHT
When Betty comes to a moment later, she is dizzy. The sound
of a baby crying wakens her and she rises to her feet, albeit
unsteady. Betty looks back once more at the farmhouse and
then up at the bathroom window from which she had just leapt,
but Mr. Smiley is nowhere to be seen. Betty limps away from
the farmhouse as quickly as she can but when she passes the
barn, the baby's crying gets even worse and so she slips into
the barn.
INT. BARN - NIGHT
The inside of the barn is dark and a maze of empty baby cribs
is strewn about.
BETTY:
Hello? Hello?
Betty moves around the maze of cribs towards the back corner,
where a pile of infant dolls are stacked.
Betty sighs, but then JUNIOR, a youth with a creepy goblin
mask and yellow pacifier bursts up from below the dolls and
stabs Betty repeatedly with garden shears. As she screams,
FLASH CUT TO:
TITLE CARD: REAPERS
FADE IN on a grainy montage of all the crime scene photos and
newspaper clippings from the violent massacre of the opening.
Titles like "Teenagers Brutally Murdered in the Woods",
"House of Death Finally Excavated," and "Bodies of 25 Missing
Babies Laid to Rest" flash across the screen. The final
photo is a yearbook picture of Betty with the headline
"Survivor of Farmhouse Massacre Succumbs to Wounds at Local
Hospital."
SIX MONTHS LATER
PAN ACROSS a similarly busy-looking city from the opening,
with images of happy suburban life like moms taking their
kids to school and couples walking their dogs.
INT. EMMA'S HOUSE - EMMA'S ROOM - MORNING
PAN ACROSS a dimly-lit bedroom just as the sun begins to peek
through the blinds. The dresser is littered with old
newspaper cutouts about the massacre in the opening. Photos
of a happy blonde teenager, EMMA WILKES, smiling with friends
are taped to the mirror. FOCUS ON a crumpled mess of
blankets on the bed. Suddenly, a loud KNOCK sounds at the
door, STIRRING Emma from her sleep. It is her mother, HELEN
WILKES.
EMMA:
Y-Yeah?! I'm up, I'm up...
HELEN (O.S.):
Is everything alright in there,
sweetie? You sound flustered.
Emma nudges her sleeping boyfriend, JUDE MORRISSEY, causing
him to groan loudly in protest.
EMMA:
(Coughing)
Yeah, just fine. Cold, is all, I
slept with the windows open.
Emma jumps out of bed and throws the window open, throwing
the clothes that Jude had left on her floor at him, beckoning
him awake. He eventually relents and slumps out of bed, his
dark shaggy hair still messy from sleep.
As he lunges towards the window, he perks his lips for Emma
but she merely waves, throwing a robe over her sheer nighty.
She hides a pipe and small sack of weed from the night before
in her nightstand drawer and covers the aroma with a few
spritzes of body spray. Jude opens his mouth to talk but
Emma shoos him away and opens the door.
HELEN:
Well, you should be more careful
about that. This city isn't as
safe as it used to be.
FOCUS ON the still-open window behind Emma. Jude is nowhere
in sight.
EMMA:
Yeah, got it, Mom. It was just hot
last night. I think the central
air is busted again.
As Emma goes to shut her window, she notices Jude stumbling
down the sidewalk into obscurity. She smiles. Helen enters
Emma's room and looks around, eyeing the newspaper cutouts.
FOCUS ON a closed vent.
HELEN:
Houston, we've got a problem.
Helen flips open the vent.
EMMA:
Oh, thanks.
HELEN:
As much as I pay a month for that
central air, I'm glad it's not
busted. Now, don't leave the
windows open at night again. If
you want to adjust the thermostat,
you know where it is, alright?
EMMA:
Right, sorry.
HELEN:
Aubrey's coming over today to do
her laundry. I'll be late, so you
two fend for yourself at dinner.
EMMA:
L-late? Why late? Aren't you
going in early?
HELEN:
If you ever get blessed enough to
be a single parent, you'll
understand. Have a nice day at
school, honey.
Helen kisses Emma on the cheek and steps out of the room but
peeks her head around the door.
HELEN: (CONT'D)
Oh, and if you're going to smoke
weed in the house, at least do it
with the windows closed. I don't
want the whole damn neighborhood to
know, okay? Love you.
Emma stands, dumbfounded, but finally manages to speak.
EMMA:
Yeah, love you, too.
INT. EMMA'S HOUSE - KITCHEN - MORNING
Emma is eating a bowl of Fruity Pebbles and watching music
videos when there is a knock at the back door.
EMMA:
It's open!
Emma's best girlfriends, LUCY PALMER, KATE WONG, and FARAH
BRADFORD, pile into the kitchen, all of them fashionably
dressed and with the most expensive cell phones.
LUCY:
Now, that's not so smart, Em.
EMMA:
Huh?
LUCY:
Leaving the back door open like
that.
KATE:
Yeah, it's pretty much suicide.
Lucy, Kate, and Farah all sit down at the table. Farah helps
herself to a fresh banana.
EMMA:
I fail to see the relationship
between those two statements...
FARAH:
Oh, come on. For someone who
covered the March Massacre so
obsessively, you sure don't seem to
have a clue.
EMMA:
It wasn't obsessively...
LUCY:
Hmm. Okay. Well, just be sure to
lock up. It's the six month
anniversary this weekend, you know.
EMMA:
Six months, huh?
KATE:
You certainly don't seem to be very
"with it" this morning. Wake-n
bake?
EMMA:
No, Jude came over last night. I
still feel pretty stoned.
FARAH:
You still look pretty stoned.
EMMA:
Fuck you, too.
LUCY:
Anyway, there's going to be a party
tomorrow night.
KATE:
Correction: The party of the year
is going to be held tomorrow night
at Riley House to celebrate the
occasion.
EMMA:
Celebrating the deaths of innocent
teenagers? Are you serious? Isn't
that a little...I don't
know...morbid?
LUCY:
Morbid, schmorbid. It's the twenty
first century. We're young. We're
desensitized. There's nothing that
can surprise us. Are you gonna
come or not?
EMMA:
Uh. Probably.
FARAH:
Let's put her down for a "yes." We
know she doesn't have anything
better to do.
KATE:
Oh, and feel free to invite Jude,
won't you?
EMMA:
Sure thing.
LUCY:
Anyway, the swim team has a meeting
this morning so I've got to get
going. See you later, Em.
Lucy leaves the kitchen through the back door.
LUCY: (CONT'D)
And remember to lock up, won't you?
EMMA:
Yes, Mother.
FARAH:
You know, she could give two shits
about the swim team meeting. She
just doesn't wanna give us a ride
to school.
KATE:
What a bitchy thing to do! Right?
EMMA:
Yeah. Right.
EXT. EMMA'S HOUSE - MORNING
Emma, Kate, and Farah all exit the front door. Emma locks up
behind her and they descend the patio stairs. As they cross
the lush front yard and move into the shadows of the
sidewalk, Emma reaches into her purse.
EMMA:
I've got something that'll make the
walk this morning go a little
smoother.
KATE:
Oh, my God! It's a joint!
EMMA:
Yeah, let's let the whole
neighborhood in on it.
FARAH:
Well, if you insist.
Emma takes the first hit and passes it to Farah, who then
passes it to Kate. As the girls walk towards school, Starlet
is briefly seen walking amongst the trees in someone's front
yard, watching them. She holds her handgun forward.
EMMA:
I really think that I really do
like Jude, you know? And it's not
just the weed. Or the booze. Or
his endowment.
KATE:
Oh, endowed, is he?
FARAH:
Yeah, 'cause you're so familiar in
that department, Kate.
KATE:
Wow, you're even a bitch when
you're high as a kite. I'm
envious.
EMMA:
Hey, do you see that?
FARAH:
See what?
FOCUS ON the yard where Starlet had just been seen. The yard
is vacant.
EMMA:
No, I guess it was nothing. I
thought I saw someone watching us.
KATE:
Someone? It wasn't a policeman,
was it?
FARAH:
Was it a cute boy?
EMMA:
I couldn't tell. Whatever it was,
it's gone now.
INT. FAIRVIEW HIGH SCHOOL - SWIMMING POOL - MORNING
When Lucy enters the high school swimming pool, she sees that
the meeting is already over. The whole place is strangely
empty. She shrugs, nonchalant.
LUCY:
Bummer.
She appears to be all alone as she walks to the edge of the
water and drops her gym bag down by her feet, but GOATHEAD
SILENTLY WATCHES HER IN THE BACKGROUND. Lucy dips her
fingers into the water and smiles.
LUCY: (CONT'D)
Time for a dip.
Lucy takes off her clothes, revealing a bathing suit with the
school colors. FOCUS ON her gym bag as she throws her
clothes into them and PAN UP to reveal that Goathead is no
longer behind her. Lucy dives into the pool and swims. PAN
ACROSS the pool to reveal its impressive size. When Lucy
reaches the other side of the pool, she kicks off the wall
and swims back across. When she surfaces at the other side,
she catches her breath and then swims back across yet again.
But in the abyss of the deep end, GOATHEAD SUDDENLY LOOMS UP
AND SWINGS HIS ROARING CHAINSAW THROUGH THE WATER. LUCY
SCREAMS IN TERROR. She darts up to the surface and makes a
mad dash to the pool's edge. Just as she pulls herself up,
she notices BABYDOLL SWING A KNIFE JUST INCHES FROM HER FACE.
LUCY SCREAMS AGAIN.
LUCY: (CONT'D)
What the fuck do you want from me?!
Lucy swims to another ledge while Goathead tracks her in the
water and Babydoll stalks across the pool's edge, the two of
them working as a team. Lucy pulls herself out of the water
just as Babydoll swings her knife, narrowly missing her.
Lucy makes a mad dash towards the emergency exit, setting off
the fire alarm.
EXT. FAIRVIEW HIGH SCHOOL - FRONT ENTRANCE - MORNING
As Emma, Kate, and Farah arrive at school, they notice the
buzz that the fire alarm has caused; crowds of their fellow
classmates swarming the front of the building while teachers
try in futility to arrange them into single file lines.
KATE:
I wonder what happened?
EMMA:
I don't know.
FARAH:
It's fucking Fairview High. It's
probably just a stupid practice
drill.
INT. FAIRVIEW HIGH SCHOOL - EMERGENCY STAIRWELL - MORNING
Lucy screams while she dashes up the narrow stairwell, still
wet from the pool and slipping as she flees in terror.
Babydoll stalks her up the stairs. When Lucy reaches the
second story landing, she tries to push the doors open but
they won't budge.
LUCY:
Come on!
FOCUS ON the axe which is lodged between the handles, locking
Lucy in the stairwell. Lucy groans in disgust but when she
notices Babydoll just a few steps below her, she screams and
continues her ascent. At the third story landing, Lucy
reaches to open the door but sees Goathead approaching her
through the window and lets out a pathetic cry. She is
losing hope. She runs up the rest of the stairs and out onto
the rooftop. PAN DOWN the stairs as Babydoll, Goathead, and
Mr. Smiley slowly stalk her.
EXT. FAIRVIEW HIGH SCHOOL - ROOFTOP - MORNING
As Lucy runs across the rooftop, PAN ACROSS the city skyline
and the beautiful sunny day. Lucy approaches the edge and
peeks down, amazed at how far off the ground she is. She
gets dizzy and backs away. Behind her, Babydoll, Goathead,
and Mr. Smiley file onto the roof. When Lucy turns around
she lets out a scream and runs to another side of the
building, a trapped animal. But her attackers continue
approaching, their weapons brandished, and when Mr. Smiley
swings his axe at her, Lucy lets out another scream and leaps
off the building.
EXT. FAIRVIEW HIGH SCHOOL - FRONT ENTRANCE - MORNING
Some students on the ground floor outside the front entrance
have noticed the commotion on the roof and point up.
FOCUS ON Emma's face as she realizes in absolute horror that
it is Lucy plummeting through the air, screaming all the way
down until she SPLATTERS FACE-FIRST ON THE SIDEWALK, SENDING
BITS OF BLOOD AND BRAIN MATTER OVER THE CROWD OF STUDENTS.
Chunks of red wind up on Emma's cheek. She lets out a
horrified scream. Chaos ensues.
EXT. FAIRVIEW CITY PARK - MORNING
PAN ACROSS the scenic landscape, the lake shining below the
bright morning sun. A jogging trail loops around the lake
and ventures off into some nearby woods. The playground is
void of children. The park is empty, except for a bench.
Jude, Emma, Farah are sitting with fellow classmates LIAM
BERKLEY, a scruffy stoner-type, and NINA WALLACE, a pretty
and popular blonde. They pass a joint amongst themselves
while staring vacantly at the still water of the lake. After
taking a long hit, Jude finally breaks the silence.
JUDE:
What a crazy fucking morning.
NINA:
And that's putting it lightly. I
still can't believe it.
FARAH:
I had no idea...I had no idea that
Lucy was...
EMMA:
What, suicidal?
FARAH:
(Nods)
EMMA:
She wasn't.
NINA:
But she...
EMMA:
She screamed the whole goddamn way
down. Or was I the only one who
heard that?
The group sits quietly, thinking about what Emma was saying.
Finally, after taking his turn, Liam speaks.
LIAM:
It doesn't matter, either way.
JUDE:
Huh?
LIAM:
What Em's going on about. The
police department doesn't give a
shit now, just like they didn't
give a shit six months ago when
those kids got killed in the
forest.
NINA:
Um, excuse me? My father is the
fucking sheriff of this town...
LIAM:
Well, I wouldn't go around
bragging.
NINA:
Fuck you!
LIAM:
As I was saying, the cops are just
gonna rule Lucy's death a suicide.
Besides, she was a party girl.
She's probably got all sorts of
shit in her system for when the
toxicology reports come in.
That'll mean loads more than claims
of her screaming as she fell.
EMMA:
It's not fair.
JUDE:
Babe, don't even worry about him.
He's a pothead. He's got no idea
what he's talking about.
Emma stands up, disgusted and flustered. She takes a few
steps away from the bench. FOCUS ON the woods behind her in
the distance, where a few figures can be seen moving off into
obscurity.
EMMA:
Look around, Jude. We're potheads,
too. Everyone under thirty in this
shithole town is a fucking pothead.
There's nothing else to do.
FARAH:
Except get hurled off of rooftops
before first period, apparently...
EMMA:
Lucy was your friend too, Farah. I
wouldn't make jokes.
Emma walks away, coldly.
JUDE:
Babe?! Babe, come on! Where are
you going?
Emma disappears into the distance.
EXT. EMMA'S HOUSE - MORNING
When Emma reaches her house, she runs up the sidewalk and
onto the patio. As she reaches for the front door to unlock
it, it pushes back. FOCUS ON her eyes, wide with suspicion.
Somebody is already inside.
EMMA:
Hello? Mom, are you in there?
No response. Emma pushes it all the way open, looks around,
and steps inside.
INT. EMMA'S HOUSE - MORNING
Emma is extremely cautious as she navigates her house. She
checks all of the downstairs, but the coast appears to be
clear. PAN UP as she walks up the stairs, into the unknown
of the second story hallway. Just as she is about to enter
her room, A FIGURE BURSTS OUT. EMMA SCREAMS. She is
relieved to see that it is just her older sister, AUBREY
WILKES, pretty and of college age.
AUBREY:
What the fuck is wrong with you?
Screaming like that. Aren't you
supposed to be at school?
EMMA:
Aren't you?
AUBREY:
I skipped. I didn't have anything
clean to wear. What's your excuse?
Emma starts to cry. Aubrey instantly softens and escorts her
little sister into her bedroom, sitting down on the bed with
her.
AUBREY: (CONT'D)
Hey, it's alright. Listen, I'm
right here. What happened? Why
aren't you at school, Em?
EMMA:
Lucy's dead.
AUBREY:
What?
EMMA:
Lucy Palmer. One of my closest
friends. She died at school today.
AUBREY:
Oh, you've got to be fucking
kidding me. Can you talk about it?
What happened?
EMMA:
She...
Emma bursts into tears yet again. Aubrey wraps her arm
around her, softly rocking her. She brushes her hair back.
AUBREY:
Look, I'm your big sister. You can
tell me anything, but I can't help
you if you refuse to talk.
EMMA:
(sobbing)
I know. Oh, God, Aubrey. It's
still just so fresh in my brain. I
still see it.
AUBREY:
See what? What the hell happened
at school, Emma? Talk to me.
EMMA:
Lucy fell off the rooftop before
first period. She landed on the
sidewalk in front of the main
entrance.
AUBREY:
Oh, shit. Em, I'm so sorry.
EMMA:
She screamed the whole way down.
But they'll probably just call it a
suicide. I'm scared.
AUBREY:
Scared? Em, you've got nothing to
be scared of.
EMMA:
But I do. We all do.
AUBREY:
What do you mean?
But Emma is done explaining herself for now. She recoils to
her bed and spreads out, pulling the blankets over her head.
She continues to sob, understandably exhausted from the
traumatic events of that morning. Aubrey stands up to leave.
Just as she is almost out the door, she notices all of the
memorabilia about the March Massacre decorating Emma's
dresser like a shrine of death. She gets a chill.
INT. NATALIE'S HOUSE - NATALIE'S ROOM - MORNING
NATALIE BROOKS, a high school girl with fiery red hair, is
lounging in her room with fellow popular friends KENDRA GIBBS
and MARIA GOMEZ. The three of them are drinking beer and
laughing at the open yearbooks sprawled across the bed.
Natalie points to a picture of Lucy.
NATALIE:
She almost looks better here than
she did this morning with her face
splattered all over the sidewalk.
Almost.
MARIA:
Whoa, bitchy. That's pretty low.
A lot of those kids that saw it
happen are going to need copious
amounts of therapy.
KENDRA:
I still hate myself for skipping.
I'm a fucktard.
NATALIE:
This isn't news to us. Look at
that stupid gleam in your eye; you
don't even know what "copious"
means, do you?
KENDRA:
Does it matter? Let me just drink
until I blackout so I can feel
better about missing the coolest
thing that'll happen this year.
MARIA:
I heard that Lucy was pregnant.
Maybe that's why she...?
NATALIE:
There's no "maybe" about it. She
slept with half the baseball team
this summer.
MARIA:
Gross! Those guys aren't even
cute. Passable, maybe, but not
cute.
KENDRA:
I'd have killed myself, too. I've
just been thinking that, like, I
can't afford to get fat.
NATALIE:
Well, drink up, Sweetie. There's
like three days worth of calories
in all of the beer you've drank.
KENDRA:
You're just fucking with me. It
tastes too good.
MARIA:
Yeah, everything in moderation, you
lush.
NATALIE:
Right. Save some for later, 'cause-
Suddenly, a loud CRASHING sound emanates from downstairs. It
sounds like someone else is in the house with them. All
three of the girls go as white as ghosts.
KENDRA:
Did you hear that?
NATALIE:
No, we're both deaf.
MARIA:
What the hell was that? Nat, I
thought your parents were in Vegas?
NATALIE:
They are.
The CRASHING gets increasingly worse, as if the furniture
downstairs is getting thrown about. The girls huddle
together on the bed, staring at the open doorway.
KENDRA:
What the fuck is going on?
MARIA:
Burglars?
NATALIE:
How in the hell would I know?
The CRASHING sounds from downstairs come to an abrupt stop.
FOCUS ON the girls' faces. All is silent for a moment, but
then a CHAINSAW SUDDENLY ROARS TO LIFE.
MARIA:
Is that a fucking chainsaw?!
KENDRA:
N-Nat, I'm scared!
All three girls are petrified with fear as the CHAINSAW GETS
LOUDER AND LOUDER. Someone is coming up the stairs, quickly.
Natalie finally snaps back into reality and rushes to the
open doorway. Just as she reaches it, she sees Goathead
charging at her and SCREAMS. She slams the door and locks
it, but Goathead makes quick work of it, cutting it apart in
seconds. THE GIRLS SCREAM IN HORROR. Maria runs into the
bathroom, Natalie cowers in the corner, but Kendra is too
scared to move from the bed. Goathead runs her through with
the chainsaw, gutting her and sending sprays of blood all
across the room. Some of it splashes Natalie in the face and
she SCREAMS, running around the bed and out the door while
Goathead continues slaughtering Kendra.
INT. NATALIE'S HOUSE - UPSTAIRS BATHROOM - MORNING
Maria locks the door behind her, screaming in terror as she
makes a mad dash to the window. She opens it and starts to
squeeze through, but she notices a blonde woman down on the
lawn.
MARIA:
Please, help!
The woman turns around, revealing that creepy Marilyn Monroe
mask and a LOADED HANDGUN; it is Starlet.
FOCUS ON Maria as she tries to wiggle back out into the
bathroom, but Starlet shoots her and the bullet goes straight
through her screaming mouth and out the top of her head.
Maria is dead. She slumps down and her corpse grimly hangs
halfway out the window.
INT. NATALIE'S HOUSE - LIVING ROOM - MORNING
Natalie sprints down the stairs and into her living room,
noticing the demolished furniture. As she makes a beeline
for the front door, Babydoll rises up from behind the couch,
her massive knife brandished. Natalie SCREAMS and backs up
into Junior. She turns, SCREAMS again, and Junior SWINGS HIS
SHEARS AT HER. She dodges them and runs towards the back
door. FOCUS ON the front door behind as it opens and Starlet
joins in on the others as Babydoll and Junior stalk towards
her. In the distance, Goathead descends the stairs, joining
in on the hunt. As Natalie rushes towards the back door, Mr.
Smiley emerges from an open door and swings his axe, barely
missing her. She screams and runs out of the backdoor.
EXT. NATALIE'S HOUSE - BACK YARD - MORNING
Natalie screams in horror as she runs across her vast back
yard. All of the reapers chase after her, the five of them
like a pack of wild animals. Natalie runs to the fence and
starts to climb it but then a GUNSHOT sounds out and the
bullet rips through her shoulder. She screams and falls down
onto the lawn. Natalie looks up, the beautiful morning sun
disorienting her as the five killers surround her.
NATALIE:
P-please?
But then Babydoll STABS HER IN THE HEART and as she slowly
bleeds out, the other reapers join in, cutting and stabbing
her beyond recognition. Starlet finishes off the violence by
shooting Natalie in the head repeatedly.
EXT. FAIRVIEW PLAZA - AFTERNOON
The street in front of the plaza is filled with news vans and
police cars. A crowd of reporters with concerned townspeople
continues to grow. SHERIFF HEATH WALLACE emerges on the
stage with DEPUTY CHERYL CHANDLER and OFFICER BRIAN LANGLEY.
The sheriff approaches the podium with a grim look on his
face. Cameras flash and reporters raise their mics up.
SHERIFF WALLACE:
The bodies of three teenage girls
were discovered at a local
residence. Until we are able to
notify all of the parents, the
names of the victims cannot be
released. This is an official
homicide case and the Fairview
Police Department will do all we
can to bring this case to a close
as quickly as possible. Now, are
there any questions?
In the audience, fresh-out-of-journalism-school, the
ambitious and pretty young reporter VANESSA LOWE is the first
to ask.
VANESSA:
Are you at liberty to divulge any
information regarding the actual
murder itself?
SHERIFF WALLACE:
All that I can say is that I'd
never witnessed such thoughtless
brutality in all my years on the
force. The rest has to wait until
the official coroner's report.
REPORTER #1:
Another girl died at the high
school this morning, isn't that
right? Is her death related?
SHERIFF WALLACE:
At this point, the two are
unrelated incidents.
VANESSA:
Sheriff, could this sudden
resurgence in crime here in
Fairview at all be related to the
March Massacre?
SHERIFF WALLACE:
There is no evidence indicating
anything of the sort.
REPORTER #2:
No arrests were made in relation to
that case, correct?
SHERIFF WALLACE:
Uh, that is correct, but the
investigation of that case is
ongoing as well.
VANESSA:
It looks like you may have a serial
killer on your hands, Sheriff.
SHERIFF WALLACE:
Alright, that's enough. No further
questions.
As Sheriff Wallace, Deputy Chandler, and Officer Langley
leave the plaza stage, the reporters and townspeople shout
after them, but they disappear.
INT. EMMA'S HOUSE - EMMA'S ROOM - AFTERNOON
FOCUS ON Emma as she jerks up in bed. Her cell phone is
ringing. She reaches for it on the night stand and answers.
EMMA:
Hello?
KATE (V.O.):
How are you holding up?
EMMA:
Not great. I slept through most of
the morning.
KATE (V.O.):
Yeah, same. Are you watching the
news?
EMMA:
Hmph. Of course not. Why?
KATE (V.O.):
Nina's dad just made a statement.
Three more girls died today.
EMMA:
Oh, shit. Are you serious? What
happened?
KATE (V.O.):
No clue; I guess they were
murdered.
No details or anything, Sheriff
Wallace just said he'd never seen
anything so brutal. I wonder who
it was?
EMMA:
That's...
KATE (V.O.):
Scary?
EMMA:
Yeah.
KATE (V.O.):
I know. It was three girls from
our school. My mom's, like,
freaking out.
EMMA:
Are you...Are you still going to
that party at Riley House tomorrow
night?
KATE (V.O.):
Probably. It's not like crying in
my room for another day is gonna
make me feel better. Besides, Lucy
would want me there. And you, too.
EMMA:
Hmm. Maybe.
KATE (V.O.):
Think about it. And tell Jude!
Bye, Love.
EMMA:
Kay. Bye.
Emma hangs up, crawls out of bed, and goes into the adjoining
bathroom.
INT. EMMA'S HOUSE - EMMA'S BATHROOM - AFTERNOON
Emma splashes some water from the sink on her face and stares
at her reflection. FOCUS ON the tired look in her eyes. The
stress from a rough day is blatant on her pretty young face.
EMMA:
Not so good, Em. Not so good.
After a shower, Emma breathes a sigh of relief. The steam
fills the bathroom and she wraps herself up in a towel,
stepping onto the bath mat. She heads towards the door,
passing a window. FOCUS ON the window, where Mr. Smiley is
STANDING AMONGST THE TREES, WATCHING.
EMMA: (CONT'D)
Wh-what the?
Emma stares outside the window, but Mr. Smiley is gone.
INT. EMMA'S HOUSE - EMMA'S ROOM - AFTERNOON
Emma grabs her phone and sends a quick text to Jude. Then
she goes to her desk, powers up her laptop, and plays a
popular dance track from her iTunes. She dances over to her
closet and picks something cute to wear. As she grabs her
blow-dryer from a drawer, she notices that her phone has lit
up; Jude responded. She reads it, smiles, and then proceeds
to dry her hair. FOCUS ON the door behind Emma as she dries
her hair with her back to it; the door opens and someone
GRABS HER. SHE SCREAMS, DROPPING THE BLOW-DRYER. It breaks
onto the floor. Emma turns, ready to strike, but it is only
Aubrey standing there, dumbfounded.
AUBREY:
A little jumpy today, aren't we?
EMMA:
What the hell, Aubrey? You made me
drop my blow-dryer.
AUBREY:
You can use Mom's.
EMMA:
That's not the point. You don't
just sneak up on people like that.
The beginning of an argument between sisters. Emma turns her
music off. She is clearly upset but tries to play it cool
while she puts on her clothes.
AUBREY:
Look, I'm sorry. I'll get you a
new one.
EMMA:
Whatever. Forget it. What did you
come up here for, anyway?
AUBREY:
To see if you were awake yet. I
saw something horrible on the news.
EMMA:
Yeah, Kate told me. Three more
girls are dead.
AUBREY:
It's scary. I wonder if it was
gang-related, or...?
EMMA:
Don't ask me.
Emma has finished getting dressed, so she touches up on her
makeup a little in the mirror.
AUBREY:
Where are you going?
EMMA:
Out.
AUBREY:
With who?
EMMA:
Jude. Why?
AUBREY:
Just curious. Worried, too, I
guess. Em, before you passed out,
you said that we should all be
scared. Do you know something that
I don't?
EMMA:
What are you getting at?
AUBREY:
No, I guess it's nothing. Are you
gonna use Mom's blow-dryer?
EMMA:
I guess I have to, seeing as how
you made me break mine.
AUBREY:
Right. I'll go get it.
While Aubrey goes to Helen's room to retrieve the blow-dryer,
Emma walks over to her bedroom window and looks out at the
yard. FOCUS ON the shadows dancing between the trees.
Emma strains her eyes but can see nothing. Aubrey soon
returns, blow-dryer in hand.
AUBREY: (CONT'D)
Well, here it is. Sorry for
scaring you.
EMMA:
It's fine.
AUBREY:
What time will you be back? Mom
gets off at ten.
EMMA:
By then.
Emma finishes blow-drying her hair, focusing on her
reflection in the mirror. Aubrey watches her for a moment in
the glass and then leaves the room.
INT. JUDE'S CAR - AFTERNOON
Jude's car is parked on the side of the road. Inside, Emma
and Jude pass a pipe full of weed back and forth. As they
take turns hitting the pipe, they talk.
JUDE:
Sorry about earlier.
EMMA:
Huh? No. No, I'm sorry. I acted
like a bitch.
JUDE:
Your friend died. You're entitled.
EMMA:
Well, you're just really good to
me. I'm embarrassed for storming
off like that. It's like I was
twelve again.
JUDE:
Seriously, it's cool. Let's just
enjoy this Ingrid, alright?
EMMA:
Mmm. Definitely.
JUDE:
Glad it makes you feel better.
EMMA:
It does. So, who do you think it
was?
JUDE:
Huh?
EMMA:
Three girls got killed this
morning. Didn't you hear about it?
JUDE:
No. I was making deliveries all
day. Ingrid is a very hot
commodity. What happened?
EMMA:
I don't know. Kate and Aubrey saw
something about it on the news. It
was apparently pretty brutal.
JUDE:
Crazy.
EMMA:
Yeah. Hey, what are your plans
tomorrow night?
JUDE:
Get fucked up. The usual. You?
EMMA:
Well, there's supposed to be some
big party happening at Riley House.
I think it's to commemorate that
March Massacre or whatever.
JUDE:
What, that thing you're obsessed
about?
EMMA:
I-I'm not obsessed.
JUDE:
C'mon. I've seen your dresser.
EMMA:
It's just, nothing ever happens in
Fairview.
JUDE:
And now that a body count is
steadily rising, you're satisfied?
EMMA:
Not at all. Scared, is more like
it. I don't know what's worse;
being scared, or being bored.
JUDE:
I like being scared. Bored, not so
much. When I'm bored, I do
something about it.
EMMA:
Like what?
JUDE:
Like this.
Jude leans in and kisses Emma on the mouth. She kisses him
back.
EMMA:
What was that for?
JUDE:
'Cause you're awesome. Of course
I'll go to your creepy party
tomorrow.
INT. COSTUME SHOP - SALES FLOOR - EVENING
The costume shop looks eerily ominous. PAN ACROSS the wide
assortment of menacing-looking masks. Liam is busy arranging
a display of special fake pirate swords when his manager,
SALLY, young but dedicated, beckons him while she organizes
various grotesque alien heads on the top shelf.
SALLY:
Uh, Liam? Front register?
Liam looks at the front register and sees an IMPATIENT MOTHER
and her ROWDY SON.
LIAM:
Um. Sure thing, Sally.
SALLY:
Thanks so much.
Liam maneuvers around the various displays and makes his way
to the front register, where he logs in with his employee
information.
LIAM:
Hi. Did you find everything you
were looking for?
IMPATIENT MOTHER:
You know what? Unfortunately, no.
See, my boy wanted his Dad and I to
throw him a superhero-themed
birthday this year. But all that I
could manage to find were Superman
and Spiderman costumes.
ROWDY SON:
Superman and Spiderman suck! I
wanna be the Joker!
LIAM:
The Joker is a supervillain.
Different section. C'mon.
Liam guides the impatient mother and her rowdy son to the
villain section of the store. The three of them are
oblivious while Liam pulls out a Joker costume that BABYDOLL
IS STALKING AROUND IN THE FAR OFF DISTANCE BEFORE
DISAPPEARING BEHIND A RACK OF COSTUMES.
ROWDY SON:
Oh, cool! I'm gonna be way cooler
than my stupid friends.
IMPATIENT MOTHER:
Honey, what did I tell you about
using that word? Anyway, thank
you. You've been a big help.
LIAM:
Shall I ring that up for you?
IMPATIENT MOTHER:
Sure, that'd be great.
ROWDY SON:
Hurry up!
IMPATIENT MOTHER:
Sweetie! Where are your manners?
I'm sorry, he's normally much more
well-behaved than this.
LIAM:
Uh. Yeah, I could see that.
EXT. COSTUME SHOP - PARKING LOT - EVENING
The impatient mother crosses the largely-vacant parking lot
briskly. Her rowdy son is just a few steps behind her, too
enamored with his new Joker costume to keep up. FOCUS ON the
rowdy son while he admires his costume, bumping into a TALL
SHADOWY FIGURE. The boy looks up at the strange person, his
mouth gaping with fear.
IMPATIENT MOTHER:
Sweetheart, let's go!
ROWDY SON:
C-coming.
The rowdy son quickly runs around the ominous figure and gets
into the backseat. The figure of Mr. Smiley then disappears
around the corner of the building.
INT. COSTUME SHOP - SALES FLOOR - EVENING
While Liam sweeps the floor, Sally finishes counting out the
drawers of the register.
SALLY:
You almost done?
LIAM:
Huh? It's not even eight yet.
SALLY:
Curfew's about to go in effect.
Just take the trash out and we'll
call it a night, okay?
LIAM:
Sure thing.
INT. COSTUME SHOP - BACK HALLWAY - EVENING
Just as Liam appears around a corner of the back hallway,
full trash bag in hand, the back door swings shut. Someone
has just snuck inside. Oblivious, Liam disappears into the
alley, whistling a happy tune.
EXT. COSTUME SHOP - ALLEY - EVENING
Liam walks down the dark alley, still whistling. He hurls
the trash bag into the dumpster and attempts to return
through the back door, but it is locked.
LIAM:
What the fuck?
He bangs on the door.
LIAM: (CONT'D)
Yo! Sally!
He bangs some more, but no response. Bewildered, he walks
back up the alley and into the parking lot.
EXT. COSTUME SHOP - PARKING LOT - EVENING
Liam crosses the parking lot and tries the front door to the
costume shop, but it is locked. FOCUS ON Liam from inside
the store as he puts his face up against the glass door,
peering inside. PAN ACROSS the inside of the shop. All
looks still. He bangs on the glass.
LIAM:
Sally, you locked me out! Let me
in!
FOCUS ON a figure which comes into view in the empty street
behind Liam. It starts to approach him. Upon hearing
footsteps, he turns and stares wide-eyed at Junior, who tilts
his creepy goblin mask to the side and examines him.
LIAM: (CONT'D)
Uh. Hi. Store's closed, dude.
Liam bangs on the door again but Junior continues to
approach.
LIAM: (CONT'D)
Dude. I said the store's closed.
Didn't you hear about the curfew?
Go home. Hey, Sally! Get your ass
out here!
Suddenly, a metallic scrape sounds out and Liam turns; Junior
has pulled out his oversized shears. Liam stands up against
the glass, staring at Junior, too scared to scream. Then
Junior DASHES forward, holding his shears forward.
LIAM: (CONT'D)
Oh, fuck! Sally! Sally, please!
Open up! Please!
Junior SLAMS into Liam and the two struggle. Liam manages to
pin Junior down to the pavement and punches him in the head.
Then Liam stands up and kicks Junior in the ribs a few times
before a GUNSHOT sounds out and Liam SCREAMS, falling to the
pavement. He's just been shot in the leg.
LIAM: (CONT'D)
Shit. My leg. My fucking leg!
While Liam attempts to drag himself across the parking lot to
his car, he notices Starlet emerging from one side of the
shop, her gun raised. His eyes go wide with horror and he
holds a hand up as a shield. But then Junior LUNGES from out
of view and SWINGS HIS SHEARS DOWN, STABBING LIAM IN THE
CHEST. Blood soaks his shirt. As he lay dying, Starlet
walks up to his writhing body and shoots him right between
the eyes.
INT. COSTUME SHOP - BACK HALLWAY - EVENING
Sally emerges from her office, balances her purse and coat,
and goes over to lock the back door. Upon noticing that it
is already locked tight, she returns to the sales floor.
INT. COSTUME SHOP - SALES FLOOR - EVENING
On the sales floor, PAN ACROSS the creepy costumes and
festive displays that fill the room. As it continues to get
darker outside, shadows bounce across the room, giving it a
thoroughly eerie atmosphere. Sally looks around for any sign
of Liam, but cannot see him.
SALLY:
Liam? Where the hell did you go?
Sally shrugs, mumbles to herself, and heads across the sales
floor towards the front door. FOCUS ON the background, where
Mr. Smiley and Babydoll WATCH SALLY, BLENDING IN with the
creepy costumes that decorate the walls. Sally is oblivious
of the cat-and-mouse game Mr. Smiley and Babydoll are playing
behind her as she approaches the door but when a display of
clown masks falls to the floor, she turns. FOCUS ON Sally's
eyes as she stares at the mess, now aware that she is not
alone in the store.
SALLY: (CONT'D)
H-Hello? Liam, is that you?
Suddenly, a RAIN OF GLASS EXPLODES ALL OVER SALLY and
something KNOCKS HER TO THE FLOOR. She screams. Shaken,
Sally sees that it is LIAM'S BLOODY CORPSE that had been
HURLED THROUGH the door and SCREAMS BLOODY MURDER. Sally
notices Starlet and Junior approach through the broken front
end of the store and scrambles to get up.
Running to the back of the store, Sally SCREAMS when Mr.
Smiley bursts forward out of the darkness, swinging his axe.
She backs right up into Babydoll and turns. Sally screams as
Babydoll brings her knife down into Sally's chest over and
over and over again.
INT. NEWS STATION - VANESSA'S OFFICE - NIGHT
Vanessa is up late at her computer in the news station,
surfing various web sites concerning the March Massacre.
With an iced coffee and a cigarette, she sits entranced. She
skims through the graphic crime scene photos of the original
murders, trying to make a connection.
VANESSA:
Seven teenagers murdered in just a
day, nearly six months ago. Four
girls killed today. Could it be?
Suddenly, a young intern, BLAKE, whips around her cubicle,
frightening her.
BLAKE:
Oh, I'm sorry, Ms. Lowe. Did I
scare you?
VANESSA:
Just a little.
BLAKE:
I filed those papers like you
asked. Will that be all?
VANESSA:
Has everyone else left already?
BLAKE:
Yeah, those murders today have
everyone a little on edge.
VANESSA:
Even us journalists, apparently.
All part of being part of a dying
industry. Alright, that's fine.
You go on ahead, I'll just be a
minute.
BLAKE:
Okay. See you tomorrow.
VANESSA:
Bye.
Vanessa skims through the disturbing photos one more time and
then, noticing how creepy the news station is all alone, she
decides to call it a night and puts out her cigarette.
INT. NEWS STATION - PARKING GARAGE - NIGHT
Vanessa leaves the news station and arrives at an upper level
of the parking garage. PAN ACROSS the mostly empty lot,
quiet and eerie at this time of night. As Vanessa fumbles
around in her purse for her keys, she notices something
strange IN THE BACKGROUND and stops to look. Blake's car is
a total mess; some of the windows are broken open, creating a
sea of glass on the pavement. Both the tail lights and the
headlights are on. The back door on the driver's side is
slightly ajar.
VANESSA:
What the hell happened here?
As Vanessa slowly makes her way towards Blake's vehicle, she
strains her neck to see if she can see anything in the car
but it is no avail; all she sees is darkness.
VANESSA: (CONT'D)
Blake? Are you in there?
Getting no response, Vanessa fears the worse and takes those
last few crucial steps towards Blake's demolished vehicle.
Vanessa SCREAMS at what she sees inside: Blake's mutilated
body lay in a pool of blood in the backseat, Junior's shears
still imbedded deep within his chest. Junior lay huddled in
the darkness, eating the gore. Junior GLARES UP at Vanessa
and lets out a baby's cry. Vanessa SCREAMS again and runs.
As Vanessa makes a mad dash towards her car, Junior pulls out
the shears from Blake's corpse and hurries after her. When
Vanessa gets within distance of her car, she presses on the
clicker frantically, unlocking it. As soon as she reaches
for the door handle, Goathead BURSTS UP from the other side
of the car, SLASHING THE HOOD OF THE CAR WITH HIS CHAINSAW.
Vanessa SCREAMS and sparks go flying. With two stalkers now
upon her, Vanessa sprints towards the emergency stairwell and
slams the door shut.
INT. NEWS STATION - PARKING GARAGE - STAIRS - NIGHT
Vanessa stops for just a second to catch her breath on the
third floor landing, tears streaming. Suddenly, BABYDOLL
EMERGES FROM THE DARKNESS AND SWINGS AT VANESSA. Vanessa
turns and SCREAMS, catching Babydoll's arm before her blade
can do any damage. The two struggle and tumble down the
stairs to the second floor landing.
Disoriented and in pain, Vanessa comes to first, reaching for
Babydoll's knife. But Babydoll comes to and grabs it right
before, slicing her arm. Vanessa winces, grabs the wound,
and rushes down the rest of the stairs and out onto the
sidewalk, hurt but alive.
EXT. FAIRVIEW CITY PARK - NIGHT
Emma and Jude are sitting together at the bench by the lake,
watching the moon's reflection on the water. Jude quickly
finishes his beer in one swig.
JUDE:
Still not finished yet?
EMMA:
Guess I'm a lightweight tonight.
JUDE:
And every other night. You sure
you'll still be left standing after
the party at Riley House?
EMMA:
I'll manage.
As Emma starts to drink her beer, blue and red lights start
to flash against the trees. Jude notices it first, looking
around until he sees the PATROL CAR STEADILY APPROACHING.
JUDE:
Fucking shit fuck!
EMMA:
What? Oh, Goddammit, it's the
cops!
JUDE:
Here.
Jude grabs his empty beer bottles and the one Emma was still
nursing and hurls them into a nearby trash bin. When the
patrol car comes to a stop, Deputy Chandler emerges and waves
her flashlight on the startled teens.
DEPUTY CHANDLER:
Curfew's at nine o'clock, guys.
JUDE:
Curfew?
EMMA:
Oh, really? I hadn't heard about
it. Sorry, my fault, I--
DEPUTY CHANDLER:
You're Helen's daughter, aren't
you?
EMMA:
Huh?
DEPUTY CHANDLER:
Helen Wilkes; she works at the
hospital, right?
EMMA:
Uh, yes.
DEPUTY CHANDLER:
She did such a great job with my
nephew when he broke his collarbone
last summer. I--
JUDE:
Well, since it's curfew and all,
I'd better jet. Ready, Em?
EMMA:
I--
DEPUTY CHANDLER:
Oh, I can give her a ride back to
her house. It won't be a problem,
really.
JUDE:
Um, alright, I guess. But only if
it's okay with Em.
EMMA:
Yeah, sure.
JUDE:
Okay. See you later.
EMMA:
Bye.
Emma stands, watching as Jude jogs off into the distance
towards his vehicle. Just further in the darkness amongst
the trees, Starlet quietly walks along, always watching.
INT. DEPUTY CHANDLER'S PATROL CAR - NIGHT
As Deputy Chandler drives along the dark and quiet city
streets, Emma sits in the passenger seat. PAN ACROSS the
moving businesses, houses, and city lights as they become a
blur of colors.
DEPUTY CHANDLER:
You know, I normally don't condone
underage drinking, but I was a
teenager once, too. I know it's
hard to avoid when everyone around
you is doing it.
EMMA:
So, you knew?
DEPUTY CHANDLER:
Of course. That boy of yours, he
doesn't have much tact, does he?
EMMA:
Heh. No, I guess not.
DEPUTY CHANDLER:
A right up here, you said?
EMMA:
Yeah. And then a left.
The car turns and moves into more and more suburban territory
when suddenly, a broadcast plays on the radio, startling the
two women.
SHERIFF WALLACE (V.O.):
All available units report to
Carol's Costume Emporium on
Riverside Drive. I repeat, all
available units report to--
Deputy Chandler quickly picks up, eyes still focused on the
road, and speaks into the device.
DEPUTY CHANDLER:
Sheriff, it's Cheryl. What
happened?
SHERIFF WALLACE (V.O.):
Two more bodies. Young ones. A
goddamn bloodbath, too; the whole
store's a mess.
DEPUTY CHANDLER:
Jesus Christ. I'm on my way,
Sheriff. Ten minutes.
Deputy Chandler hangs up and turns down the street, pulling
up towards Emma's house.
EMMA:
Did he say the costume shop?
DEPUTY CHANDLER:
It's not important. What's
important is that you--
EMMA:
My friend Liam works at the--
DEPUTY CHANDLER:
Listen, you need to go home and get
some rest. It's dangerous but
that's what the police are for;
we're here to protect you.
EMMA:
Yeah. Just like you protected Lucy
and those other girls.
Emma slams the door and runs up the sidewalk. Deputy
Chandler sits for a second, obviously hurt by Emma's words,
before she speeds off into the distance with her patrol siren
blaring. When she is off in the distance, Emma stands on the
porch and watches for a few moments. CLOSE UP on her face as
the reality sinks in. In her gut, she knows what happened at
the costume store. She sighs and then solemnly retreats
inside her house.
INT. HOSPITAL - PATIENT ROOM - NIGHT
Vanessa lay in a hospital bed with a bandage wrapped around
the cut on her arm. Helen adjusts a nearby bag with medicine
constantly dripping. Officer Langley stands near the bed,
frantically writing in his note pad.
OFFICER LANGLEY:
You said there was three of them?
VANESSA:
Yes. Are you deaf or something? I
swear, the police force in this
town is--
OFFICER LANGLEY:
Just making sure I've got all the
facts down correctly, ma'am.
VANESSA:
Yeah, well, I'm sure that you did
the best you could, Clancy, but I
nearly got sliced and diced
tonight.
OFFICER LANGLEY:
You've got nothing to worry about.
VANESSA:
My intern was wearing his insides
like a winter jacket, Officer.
I'll have to agree to disagree. In
fact, I'd say that I have a whole
hell of a lot to worry about.
OFFICER LANGLEY:
We're doing all that we can with
our resources, which may be
limited, but--
VANESSA:
May be limited? I've actually yet
to see any of the cops in this town
use their resources to solve any
real case other than the latest
great heist at the liquor store.
OFFICER LANGLEY:
Ms. Lowe, I'm going to have to
respectfully ask that you calm
yourself. I understand that you're
still in shock but I am an officer
of the law and--
VANESSA:
And what? You're going to catch
the bad guys, so everything is
gonna be alright? Afraid not. You
had your chance when all of this
happened to those poor kids back in
March.
Now at his breaking point, Officer langley throws his pen
down and shoves his note pad into his pocket, nearly fuming
with pent up rage.
OFFICER LANGLEY:
Alright, that's it. I think I've
got all I need here.
If I need anything, I'll call you.
Get well soon.
As Officer Langley storms out of the room, Vanessa calls
after him in futility.
VANESSA:
What? No, you can't--
Helen, now finished with the bag of medicine, hands Vanessa a
little plastic cup with a pill in it.
HELEN:
It'll help you sleep. Sounds like
that's what you need. Or a good
fuck.
VANESSA:
Excuse me?
HELEN:
I'm sorry, that can probably be
classified as rude. But you
weren't exactly a class act back
there, either.
VANESSA:
Well, it's just--
HELEN:
Fairview is normally a very
peaceful city. And yes, terrible
things have happened here before,
but it's not going to make anyone
hurt any less by acting the way you
did with Officer Langley. It's
easy to point the finger. It's
hard to do something and make a
difference.
Vanessa opens her mouth to say something but instead Helen
shoves the plastic cup into her hand and leaves the room.
Vanessa sits, dumbfounded.
VANESSA:
What a bitch.
INT. GRAHAM'S APARTMENT - LIVING ROOM - NIGHT
GRAHAM, an attractive college student, is lounging on the
couch and watching "South Park" on his flat screen
television. He laughs and then suddenly, there is a knock at
the door.
GRAHAM:
It's open.
The door opens. It is Jude. He has a slightly confused look
on his face as he shuts and locks the door behind him.
JUDE:
Living on the edge, are we?
GRAHAM:
Huh?
JUDE:
All of the murders. You're
seriously just chilling here with
the door unlocked? On a night like
this?
GRAHAM:
Oh. It's nothing, dude. I live in
a fucking apartment. I'm not even
worried.
FOCUS ON the coffee table, which is covered in empty beer
cans and bottles.
JUDE:
Thirsty?
GRAHAM:
Nah, man. Oh, do you have my bud?
Jude exposes a sack of weed from his hoodie and tosses it
onto the table, putting his hand out. Graham hands him his
cash.
JUDE:
Cool. Well, I guess I'll see you
at the party tomorrow?
Jude heads towards the door.
GRAHAM:
You're leaving?
JUDE:
Uh. Yeah.
GRAHAM:
Just one bowl? Before you go?
JUDE:
Dude, I'm gonna be driving and--
GRAHAM:
Like that's ever stopped you
before. Besides, you're a pro at
driving stoned. Just sit down.
Graham pats the empty space on the couch beside him while he
gets busy preparing the marijuana. Jude sighs.
JUDE:
Just one.
CUT TO the boys in a stoned and drunken stupor. Half of the
weed is gone and many more beer bottles and cans litter the
room.
GRAHAM:
Thanks for delivering.
JUDE:
Always. Well, I--
GRAHAM:
You know, it's just something that
came to me, but...
JUDE:
What?
Graham leans in quickly and kisses Jude on the mouth. At
first, Jude looks surprised, but he does not pull back right
away. Graham does.
GRAHAM:
Sorry.
JUDE:
Uh. Yeah.
Jude gets up and puts on his hoodie and hurries towards the
door.
GRAHAM:
Jude, don't just...I'm sorry, I
don't know what I was thinking.
I'm not even gay.
JUDE:
Yeah, well, I'm not gay either.
So, now you've put me in a really
fucking awkward situation here.
Peace.
Jude makes sure to slam the door loudly behind him when he
leaves. Graham winces and watches the door.
INT. COSTUME SHOP - SALES FLOOR - NIGHT
Sheriff Wallace looks at the bloodied remains of Sally and
shakes his head in remorse. Deputy Chandler stands in the
distance, amazed at the mess around her.
SHERIFF WALLACE:
Pretty girl. So young, both of
'em.
DEPUTY CHANDLER:
What could've possibly happened
here? Who is doing this, Sheriff?
Who has this much hate inside of
them?
SHERIFF WALLACE:
That's what we have to find out.
Where the hell is Langley at?
DEPUTY CHANDLER:
On his way. I'm worried, Sheriff.
I don't know if we have enough
manpower here to handle this type
of thing.
SHERIFF WALLACE:
We'll just have to make due. Can't
get anybody helpful down here till
Monday at the earliest, anyhow.
DEPUTY CHANDLER:
It's the six month anniversary
tomorrow night. Think it's the
same sick bastards from March?
SHERIFF WALLACE:
The hell if I know.
INT. GRAHAM'S APARTMENT - BATHROOM - NIGHT
A freshly-showered Graham in only a towel is spitting
mouthwash into the sink. He gazes at the mirror for a moment
before he heads back into the living room.
INT. GRAHAM'S APARTMENT - LIVING ROOM - NIGHT
When Graham enters the living room, he is stunned to see his
front door ajar. He takes a moment and then walks over,
swinging it open. He can see no one outside and shuts it,
locking it. He peeks through the peephole, suspicious.
Suddenly, a closet door behind him BURSTS OPEN and he TURNS,
YELLING IN TERROR as Mr. Smiley dashes towards him. Mr.
Smiley swings his axe down and Graham dashes out of the way,
sprinting towards his bedroom.
INT. GRAHAM'S APARTMENT - BEDROOM - NIGHT
He slams the door behind him and locks it. Mr. Smiley begins
hacking through it.
GRAHAM:
Holy shit!
Graham runs over to the balcony and slides the glass door
open. He looks behind him, amazed at how quickly Mr. Smiley
is cutting through the door.
EXT. GRAHAM'S APARTMENT - BALCONY - NIGHT
Graham's attention returns and he steps outside. He looks
down; PAN DOWN to show that he is five stories up. He
shudders and he looks around, desperate for a way out. Mr.
Smiley cuts through the door completely and enters the
bedroom. Starlet is right behind him. Graham yells and
makes a mad dash towards the edge of the balcony. He boldly
leaps across, making it to the next balcony over in one swift
motion.
EXT. DENISE'S APARTMENT - BALCONY - NIGHT
He looks back at Mr. Smiley and Starlet and laughs a cocky,
elated laugh. After finding the door locked, he then bangs
on it, beckoning the tenant within to let him inside.
INT. DENISE'S APARTMENT - BEDROOM - NIGHT
DENISE, an attractive college-aged female, enters her
bedroom, a bewildered expression on her face.
GRAHAM:
Can you let me in? I live next
door. Someone broke into my
apartment and--
Suddenly, GUNSHOTS sound out in quick succession. Graham's
head shakes about and blood splatters on the door. Someone
has shot him multiple times and Denise SCREAMS in terror.
INT. DENISE'S APARTMENT - LIVING ROOM - NIGHT
Denise makes a mad dash for her front door and flings it
open, screaming in horror.
EXT. APARTMENT COMPLEX - FIFTH FLOOR LANDING - NIGHT
As Denise runs along the fifth floor landing, she notices
that Mr. Smiley and Starlet have left Graham's apartment and
are now hunting her down.
DENISE:
What do you want from me?!
The killers continue approaching and Denise screams, banging
on all of the doors as she races towards the stairs. All of
the doors remain locked and Denise continues running, banging
in futility. Finally, the last door swings open and an
ANNOYED TENANT in a nightgown stands.
ANNOYED TENANT:
What the hell is going on out here?
Some people have to work in the
morning.
DENISE:
I'm being attacked!
ANNOYED TENANT:
You're what?
Before Denise can say anything else, an axe SWINGS into view
and Mr. Smiley STABS the annoyed tenant in the head
repeatedly. Denise SCREAMS and heads for the stairwell, only
to see Goathead stalking up the stairs. With Mr. Smiley and
Starlet right behind her, Denise is trapped and SCREAMS as
Mr. Smiley swings his axe into her gut. Soon Starlet is upon
her as well, gnawing a chunk from her arm. Denise SCREAMS.
Blood pours onto the floor and Goathead approaches and RIPS
her intestines from her body. Denise weakly struggles as
Goathead wraps her intestines around her throat and ties an
end to the railing. Then Mr. Smiley pushes Denise over the
railing and her body plummets through the air until her
intestines rip. Denise's dead body continues to drop
silently until it lands on a car parked on the side of the
street, setting the alarm off.
INT. EMMA'S HOUSE - LIVING ROOM - NIGHT
Descending from the stairs with an empty beer in hand, Emma
notices Aubrey on the couch watching the local news.
EMMA:
You're still here?
AUBREY:
A lot of laundry.
EMMA:
Um. Yeah, apparently so. When is
Mom getting home?
AUBREY:
It should be soon.
INT. EMMA'S HOUSE - KITCHEN - NIGHT
Emma hurls her empty beer into the trash and gets a fresh one
from the fridge. Behind her, Aubrey enters and leans in the
doorway, her arms folded across her chest. Aubrey clears her
throat to get Emma's attention.
EMMA:
Yeah?
AUBREY:
You're going through those beers
kind of fast, aren't you?
EMMA:
Like you're some sort of authority
on the subject.
AUBREY:
Yeah, well, I'm twenty-one. I can
drink as much as I want but you're
my little sister and as you're
proving so flawlessly here, you've
got a lot of growing up to do
still.
EMMA:
Whatever.
Emma opens the bottle, gives Aubrey a cocky look, and takes a
long hard swig.
AUBREY:
You're a piece of work, you know
that?
EMMA:
Hm. Yeah, coming from the French
Major.
Good luck with that in five years
when you're in the unemployment
line.
AUBREY:
Listen here, you little ungrateful
cu--
Suddenly, Aubrey stops in mid-sentence, straining to hear
something. It is the television.
NEWS ANCHOR (O.S.):
...received word on the identities
of the victims who lost their lives
today. Just an awful, an atrocious
crime wave that's left locals
stunned. After the break, we'll...
Aubrey and Emma exchange glances. Behind them, in the
darkness of the back yard through the glass doors, Babydoll
can be seen moving, watching them. The girls are oblivious.
AUBREY:
They're--
EMMA:
I don't wanna know.
AUBREY:
Em--
EMMA:
I said, "I don't wanna know,"
alright?! Just fucking leave it at
that!
AUBREY:
Emma, some of them could be your
friends.
EMMA:
You just don't know when to quit,
do you? Fuck you, Aubrey.
AUBREY:
Where are you going?
Emma storms off and flings the back doors open in a tantrum.
EXT. EMMA'S HOUSE - BACK YARD - NIGHT
Emotionally distraught, Emma storms away from her house and
stands near a grove of trees, taking a swig of her beer.
Behind her, Aubrey stands in the doorway. She watches Emma
for a few moments before disappearing back into the house.
Emma is left alone in the dark back yard and takes a long
hard drink before she starts to cry. Emma looks up at the
moon and sobs quietly while she nurses her beer.
INT. EMMA'S HOUSE - LIVING ROOM - NIGHT
With a fresh beer of her own, Aubrey scoffs and plops down on
the sofa in the living room.
AUBREY:
What the fuck is her problem,
anyway?
When the news returns on the television, Aubrey turns it up,
totally engrossed. Photos of the teenage girls from earlier
that morning and the victims from the costume shop fill the
screen while the news anchor states their names.
EXT. EMMA'S HOUSE - BACK YARD - NIGHT
Still working on her beer, Emma stares at the starry sky,
oblivious that behind her Babydoll has entered the house,
closing the doors behind her. Suddenly, her phone rings; it
is Jude. Now Emma's attention is drawn to her phone and does
not notice that Babydoll has wandered into obscurity within
her very home.
EMMA:
Hi.
JUDE (V.O.):
What's going on? Did you get
cuffed?
EMMA:
Huh? Oh, Deputy Chandler. No, I
guess she's nice. How's your night
going, babe?
JUDE (V.O.):
Well, it's funny that you'd ask
that...
EMMA:
What?
JUDE (V.O.):
It's kind of hard to say. I guess
it's no big deal, honestly, it's
just--
EMMA:
Spit it out, already.
JUDE (V.O.):
After we left the park, I delivered
some weed to Graham.
EMMA:
Aubrey's friend?
JUDE (V.O.):
Yeah. And...
EMMA:
And...?
JUDE (V.O.):
He kissed me.
EMMA:
I...
JUDE (V.O.):
Crazy, right? Well, I didn't pull
away, is mostly what I needed to
get off my chest. But I was just
in shock. I feel bad. Are you
pissed? You're pissed, huh?
EMMA:
I...
JUDE (V.O.):
C'mon, Em. It just happened.
EMMA:
I didn't know Graham was gay.
JUDE (V.O.):
He's not, we were just wasted and
it happened all of the sudden. I
left right after. Look, could I
come over? You sound weird, I--
EMMA:
No. Just stay wherever you are.
JUDE:
Em, pl--
Emma hangs up and cries, hugging herself. She takes a huge
swig of beer and then turns, noticing the closed doors.
EMMA:
For fuck's sake.
Emma walks over to the doors and tries them, but they are
locked. She bangs on them loudly, impatient and upset.
Aubrey soon appears in the kitchen doorway, a bewildered look
on her face. She heads towards the doors.
AUBREY:
How did you manage to lock yourself
out, Drunky?
EMMA:
Hey, shut up. I didn't lock it.
AUBREY:
Then who did?
INT. EMMA'S HOUSE - KITCHEN - NIGHT
FOCUS ON the terror in Aubrey's eyes as she realizes that
something is amiss; before she can even take a step forward a
door behind her BURSTS OPEN and Babydoll RUSHES forward, her
knife high in the air.
EMMA:
Oh, shit! Behind you!
Aubrey turns and SCREAMS in horror. Babydoll is already upon
her and STABS through the air, but Aubrey ducks just in time
and she misses. Outside, Emma SCREAMS as she watches her
sister being attacked. Aubrey runs around the kitchen table
with Babydoll right behind her. Aubrey makes a beeline for
the front door but when LOUD BANGING SOUNDS emanate from the
other side of the door, she stops, a scared look on her face.
Suddenly, Babydoll GRABS her from behind.
AUBREY:
No!
Babydoll STABS Aubrey in the upper back and hurls her onto
the staircase.
EXT. EMMA'S HOUSE - BACK YARD - NIGHT
Still outside, Emma watches in HORROR as Babydoll stalks
towards Aubrey. Aubrey, recently wounded and in a lot of
pain, struggles up the stairs. Babydoll follows.
EMMA:
Aubrey!
Emma elbows the glass door, reaches through the hole, and
lets herself in.
INT. EMMA'S HOUSE - LIVING ROOM - NIGHT
As Emma rushes towards the stairs, the front door suddenly
SWINGS open and she SCREAMS. It is only Helen.
HELEN:
It's only me! What the hell is
going on in here?
EMMA:
Mom!
Helen gives her daughter a funny look as she steps inside,
examining her.
HELEN:
Emma? What's the matter? Why do
you look so--
EMMA:
It's Aubrey, Mom! Someone in a
mask stabbed her! She was chased
upstairs!
FOCUS ON Helen's face as it goes white with terror.
HELEN:
...What?
EMMA:
Let's go!
Just as Emma starts to run up the stairs, GOATHEAD BURSTS
FROM THE DARKNESS on the patio, his CHAINSAW roaring loudly.
Helen turns and SCREAMS. She slams the door and locks it.
Emma screams and heads towards her mother, watching in terror
as the chainsaw makes quick work of the door and Helen
freezes, struck with fear. Emma grabs her by the arm and
they sprint up the stairs.
INT. EMMA'S HOUSE - UPSTAIRS HALLWAY - NIGHT
Emma and Helen run down the hallway while the chainsaw
continues blaring downstairs. Goathead is bursting through
the front door.
HELEN:
Aubrey! Where are you?!
EMMA:
Answer us! Goddammit!
Just as Emma and Helen pass an open doorway, BABYDOLL WHIRLS
AROUND THE CORNER, SLASHING THROUGH THE AIR. The knife comes
just inches from Emma's face and both women SCREAM. Babydoll
has a bloody handprint across her mask and her knife is
drenched with blood.
HELEN:
What the hell have you done?!
Helen suddenly attacks Babydoll and tackles her down onto the
floor. As they struggle, Emma notices a wounded Aubrey
sitting in the corner of the room, her shirt covered in fresh
blood.
EMMA:
Aubrey!
The loud sound of a chainsaw roaring gets LOUDER AND LOUDER
as Goathead hurries up the stairs. Emma sees his shadow
approaching and screams, slamming the door.
INT. EMMA'S HOUSE - AUBREY'S ROOM - NIGHT
Helen attempts to pin Babydoll down but is stabbed in the
heart. Emma screams.
AUBREY:
Mom?!
Helen desperately climbs over the bed but Babydoll is quickly
upon her and brings her knife down into her body again and
again. Helen puts her hands up but Babydoll is relentless
and stabs her viciously to death, spraying the bed and room
with blood. Both girls are screaming and crying, completely
a mess.
EMMA:
What the fuck do you want from us?!
Emma grabs a lamp off the night stand and smashes it over
Babydoll's head. She collapses onto Helen's corpse, briefly
deterred. Suddenly, Goathead BURSTS into the room, his
chainsaw blaring louder than ever. Emma and Aubrey scream in
terror. Emma rushes to the window and lifts it open. She
lifts up Aubrey and prepares to push her through the window.
Aubrey stops her, willing Emma to go through. Emma gives her
sister a bewildered look.
AUBREY:
Just go!
Emma quickly wiggles through the window and stands on the
extension of roof, turning to help Aubrey through. The
chainsaw just gets louder and louder. Goathead is close.
EMMA:
Come on!
Emma grabs Aubrey's hands and helps her wounded sister
halfway through the window. Suddenly BABYDOLL BURSTS FORWARD
and slams the window down on Aubrey's back, pinning her. She
screams in horror.
AUBREY:
Emma!
Emma screams, tugging with all her might.
EMMA:
I can't!
Aubrey kicks her legs, screaming, desperate to escape, but it
is too late. Babydoll keeps the window pinned shut and
Aubrey cannot move. Then Goathead swings his chainsaw down
into her back. Aubrey and Emma SCREAM in unison. Goathead
saws through Aubrey's back, cutting her in half, and then the
window finally SLAMS shut as Aubrey's upper torso is freed
from the vice. Emma, still clutching her hands, is thrown
back and she rolls down the roof with her sister's torso,
falling through the night air. Emma screams and lands in the
bushes in the back yard.
EXT. EMMA'S HOUSE - BACK YARD - NIGHT
Coming to from a daze, Emma looks down and sees Aubrey's
upper torso nearby and SCREAMS in horror and disgust. She
looks up and sees that Babydoll and Goathead are no longer in
the window. She forces herself up and hurries around the
house. She notices flashes of red and blue in the night sky.
The police are nearby. Emma's eyes light up and she rushes
into the front yard.
EXT. EMMA'S HOUSE - FRONT YARD - NIGHT
A police vehicle is pulled up in front of Emma's house.
Someone must have heard all the noise and alerted the cops.
Emma whimpers, still in pain and her mind still a mess from
the trauma she just endured. Officer Langley steps out of
the vehicle and approaches her, shining his flashlight into
her face. She blocks the bright beam with her arm.
OFFICER LANGLEY:
Ma'am? Are you alright?
EMMA:
Everyone's dead. They killed them.
OFFICER LANGLEY:
What? Who killed who?
Emma opens her mouth to speak but suddenly JUNIOR BURSTS FROM
THE SHADOWS and viciously slashes Officer Langely's throat,
nearly decapitating him. Blood sprays out, covering Emma's
face and she SCREAMS in terror. Junior cries like a baby and
Babydoll and Goathead rush out of the front door and down the
sidewalk towards her. Junior also approaches and Emma
screams. She makes a mad dash for the street and sprints
down it, screaming the entire way.
EXT. FAIRVIEW - EMPTY STREET - NIGHT
Emma runs down the street with her attackers close behind.
She screams for help and when she comes to an intersection
her eyes light up. She runs across a series of yards until
she reaches a house she knows.
EXT. NINA'S HOUSE - FRONT YARD - NIGHT
Emma leaps up on the porch and bangs the door desperately.
Babydoll, Goathead, and Junior are getting close.
EMMA:
Nina! It's me! Let me in!
Goddammit, please let me in!
Babydoll, Goathead, and Junior are all on Nina's front yard,
quickly approaching. Emma screams louder than ever, nestling
up against the door, and suddenly FALLS backward.
INT. NINA'S HOUSE - LIVING ROOM - NIGHT
Nina, wearing her pajamas, looks down at Emma on the floor, a
confused and perturbed expression on her face.
NINA:
Em? What the hell are you doing?
And what is that on your face?
Emma's eyes bulge and she lunges up, slamming the door shut
behind her. Nina looks at her and reaches for the door.
EMMA:
No! They're outside!
NINA:
Who's outside?
EMMA:
The people that tried to kill me!
Nina folds her arms across her chest, not entirely buying the
story.
NINA:
What? Look, you're just lucky my
dad's not here. If he heard anyone
making that much noise at this
hour, he would've flipped.
EMMA:
I was fucking attacked!
NINA:
Relax. And answer my question;
what's that red stuff on your face?
Emma touches her face, notices the red on her fingers, and
withdraws in disgust.
EMMA:
B-blood...It's blood...Nina, they
snuck into my house and...
NINA:
Emma...
EMMA:
There were three of them...
NINA:
You don't look so good. You should
wash up and get some rest, alright?
EMMA:
They killed my...
Emma looks awash with fear and sorrow. Nina examines her and
then hurls the front door open. Emma screams. Nina looks
outside in the darkness and sees nothing.
NINA:
They're gone.
EMMA:
No. They're watching.
INT. NINA'S HOUSE - NINA'S ROOM - MORNING
Emma is curled up in Nina's large bed, looking forlorn. Nina
withdraws from the adjoining bathroom in a robe, still drying
her hair with a towel.
NINA:
Ugh. I'm a mess. How are you
feeling, Em?
EMMA:
Scared.
NINA:
Scared? Why scared?
Just as Emma starts to answer, there is a knock at the
bedroom door.
SHERIFF WALLACE (O.S.):
It's only me, honey. Can I come
in?
NINA:
Sure, Dad.
Sheriff Wallace enters the room, already in uniform. He is
clearly uncomfortable around Emma.
SHERIFF WALLACE:
Hi, Emma. Sorry I was out so late
last night. Nina told me
everything.
EMMA:
Did she?
SHERIFF WALLACE:
Yes. Listen, I can't even imagine
what you're going through right
now. But believe me, I will catch
these sick bastards if it kills me.
EMMA:
Let's hope it doesn't come to that.
I've lost enough people already.
Nina and her father exchange awkward glances.
NINA:
Emma, maybe we can go out and do
something fun? Anything you want.
EMMA:
I don't feel like doing anything
except curling up and--
Suddenly, there is a knock from downstairs. Emma's eyes
widen with fear.
SHERIFF WALLACE:
I'll go get it.
EMMA:
No! Don't!
NINA:
Em, calm down.
EMMA:
It's them! They're back!
SHERIFF WALLACE:
Emma, I can understand why you're
afraid, but you don't have to be.
Nothing bad will happen to you as
long as you're living under my
roof, understand?
There is another knock and Sheriff Wallace leaves the room
and heads downstairs. Nina gives Emma a long glance.
NINA:
What was that all about? You
shouldn't act like that in front of
my--
EMMA:
Sorry, Nina. I guess I'm feeling a
little irrational because my mother
and sister were fucking butchered
in front of my eyes last night!
Nina opens her mouth, sighs, and rubs Emma on the shoulder in
a comforting gesture.
SHERIFF WALLACE (O.S.):
Girls, your friends are here!
Should I send them up?
Nina and Emma look at each other for a moment and Emma
finally shrugs, begrudgingly.
NINA:
Sure thing, Dad.
Muffled chatter fills the house, getting increasingly louder,
and within moments Farah and Kate are in the room.
KATE:
Hey, girls. Emma...I...I don't
even know what to say, I...
FARAH:
Are you okay? Honestly?
Emma looks up at her friends and tries to smile but breaks
down into tears. Nina, Kate, and Farah surround her in a
loving embrace but she cannot be calmed. Sheriff Wallace
appears in the doorway.
SHERIFF WALLACE:
Is everything alright up here?
NINA:
Yeah, Dad. Em's just upset.
SHERIFF WALLACE:
Of course. Well, I hate to, but I
really need to get to the station.
I've got a lot of work that's not
gonna do itself. Remember what I
told you earlier, Emma. It's gonna
be okay.
EMMA:
Yeah. I believe you.
As soon as the door shuts downstairs, the girls sit down on
the bed, all eyes on Emma.
FARAH:
So...tell us what happened.
NINA:
Oh, Farah, I'm not sure that's such
a good idea, she--
EMMA:
It's fine. They're my friends.
They should know. Last night, some
people broke into my house and
attacked me and my family. My mom
and sister were murdered. I had
barely made it outside when I saw
the lights of a police car. I went
around to the front and saw a third
person in a mask kill a police
officer.
KATE:
Third person? In a mask? Wait,
you're saying that there are
multiple killers out there?
EMMA:
Apparently so. And they work
together. There might even be more
than three.
FARAH:
What happened next?
EMMA:
I ran here as fast as I could. And
they chased me. Nina let me in
just in time...
KATE:
It sounds so intense. I'm sorry,
Em. Truly. If there's anything we
can do for you, anything at all,
just say the word.
EMMA:
The word.
Kate smiles. Nina turns the television on. A boring local
daytime talk show is on.
FARAH:
Does Jude know?
EMMA:
No...I haven't talked to him
since...
Emma rubs her eyes, trying not to cry, but the tears come
anyway.
KATE:
What? What happened? What did
that little bastard do?
EMMA:
Compared to what my family went
through, it's nothing. He cheated,
sort of, I guess. I'm done with
him, anyway. It just hurts so much
'cause my life managed to fall
apart in a matter of hours.
Yesterday morning everything was
just fine...
NINA:
Hey, we all lose someone. How you
move on from it is what's
important.
FARAH:
Shh! Look!
Farah turns up the television. Vanessa Lowe, the reporter
who survived her attack the night before, is sitting in a
chair and talking to a female interviewer, TAMMY BATES.
TAMMY:
It's true that you sustained
injuries, yes?
VANESSA:
(pointing at her arm)
As the bandage and my insurance
indicate, yes. I spent the night
in the hospital.
TAMMY:
So, what exactly happened?
VANESSA:
I was leaving work at the local
news station and while heading to
my car in the parking garage, I
noticed something odd. A co
worker's car had apparently been
broken into. When I investigated,
I saw a little boy in a...now, I
know this sounds insane, but...a
little boy in a goblin mask. He
was eating him.
FOCUS ON Emma's face as it pales in dread.
TAMMY:
Uh, yes, that certainly sounds
insane. But how did you get
injured, Vanessa? What happened
next?
VANESSA:
I ran to my car, of course. I
wanted to get the hell out of
there, but then a...
TAMMY:
But then a...?
VANESSA:
It sounds too surreal. And
frankly, I don't think you're
taking me seriously.
TAMMY:
Oh, please. That's not it at all.
Continue.
VANESSA:
Well, then a man with a goat's head
and a chainsaw tried to kill me. I
ran to the stairwell and a woman in
a doll mask with a really big
butcher's knife attacked me. I
tried to fight her off, we fell
down the stairs, and she cut me.
Then I ran away.
TAMMY:
It's a little sensationalized,
maybe, but you heard it here first.
Vanessa Lowe, survivor--
Emma leaps up and turns the television off. Her eyes are
wide with fear as she tries to rationalize the interview she
just saw.
NINA:
What is it?
EMMA:
Th-that's exactly it. That Vanessa
lady. What's her name? Vanessa
Lowe? She's right. Those people
attacked me, too. The little boy,
he looks like a goblin or a troll
or something. And the man with the
goat head. And that woman. That
doll woman.
FARAH:
Are you serious?
EMMA:
Yes.
KATE:
That's really scary, Em. But maybe
it's a sign? Maybe there really
are only three of them? I'm sure
your dad will catch them soon,
right, Nina?
NINA:
Yeah, of course. Dad's the best at
what he does.
EMMA:
If that were the case, my mom and
sister wouldn't be in body bags
right now.
Then Emma rushes out of the room and down the stairs.
FARAH:
W-wait! Where are you going?!
EMMA (O.S.)
To talk to Vanessa Lowe!
The door slams shut behind her and Nina, Kate, and Farah are
left alone amongst themselves. Kate pats Nina's thigh
comfortingly.
KATE:
She didn't mean what she said.
NINA:
Sure she did. And she's right.
EXT. TV STATION - FRONT ENTRANCE - MORNING
Emma gets off of a bus and as it drives away she rushes into
the television station.
INT. TV STATION - MAIN LOBBY - MORNING
EMMA:
Hi, is Vanessa Lowe still in the
building?
RECEPTIONIST:
I'm sorry. She just left.
EMMA:
Oh. Okay. Thanks.
EXT. TV STATION - FRONT ENTRANCE - MORNING
Emma sits down on the front steps outside the television
station and fumbles through her purse. She doesn't have
enough bus fare to make it to the news station.
EMMA:
Goddammit.
Looking up, Emma sees Jude across the street at the outside
patio of a coffeehouse. He is on his laptop and smoking a
cigarette. Emma thinks for a moment and then calls him.
JUDE (V.O.):
Hey. I didn't think I would hear
back from you.
EMMA:
I thought you quit?
JUDE (V.O.):
Huh?
EMMA:
Smoking. Cigarettes.
JUDE (V.O.):
Oh, you can tell that sort of thing
over the phone, can you? Heh.
Can't let anything slip by you.
EMMA:
No, dumbass, I see you. I'm across
the street.
Jude looks up, looks around for a bit, and then finally sees
her. He waves.
JUDE (V.O.):
So you are. Want a coffee?
EMMA:
No. I want a ride to the news
station.
INT. JUDE'S CAR - MORNING
Ambient experimental music plays on the radio and Jude
finishes his cigarette while they speed down the busy
streets.
EMMA:
The town seems livelier, somehow.
JUDE:
News travels fast. Everyone wants
to see the town that dripped blood,
right?
EMMA:
H-hey. Don't make light of it.
JUDE:
No? I thought you were into that
sorta thing. You know, since you
chronicled the original March
Massacre so heavily.
Emma's eyes light up.
EMMA:
I think they're connected.
JUDE:
What is?
EMMA:
The March Massacre and the murders
that are happening now. I think
the same people are responsible.
JUDE:
What, so there's like some crazy
cult of masked maniacs going around
on random murder sprees?
EMMA:
I don't know. Maybe?
JUDE:
Why would they just suddenly stop
for six months, only to start back
up again, though?
EMMA:
That's what I need to talk to
Vanessa about. I'm sure she knows
more than I do.
JUDE:
What is this newfound obsession
with the reporter chick, anyway?
You're usually--
EMMA:
My mom and sister were killed last
night. I wanna get to the--
Jude slams on his breaks and looks at Emma with a concerned
expression. The car behind honks.
JUDE:
What?!
EMMA:
Don't make me say it again. Just
take me to Vanessa, okay? I need
to make sense out of all this
before anyone else gets hurt. Or
worse.
JUDE:
...Alright.
Jude speeds off into the distance.
INT. NEWS STATION - FRONT LOBBY - MORNING
Emma and Jude burst into the news station and hurry towards
the elevator. The security guard at the reception desk
stands up and waves his arms in futility.
SECURITY GUARD:
Hey! You can't just barge in here
like that!
EMMA:
Oh, piss off! It's a matter of
life and death!
Emma and Jude disappear into the elevator.
INT. NEWS STATION - ELEVATOR - MORNING
JUDE:
Heh. Way to take the initiative
back there.
EMMA:
Someone had to.
JUDE:
How are we gonna find Vanessa?
EMMA:
I know what she looks like.
JUDE:
Oh. A plan well-thought-out.
Should be easy.
INT. NEWS STATION - NEWSROOM - MORNING
Emma and Jude rush through the newsroom, looking for any
signs of Vanessa. Finally, Emma stops to ask for help.
EMMA:
Hi, I know this must seem very
strange, but I need to speak to
Vanessa Lowe immediately. Do you
know where she is?
JOURNALIST:
She should be back by now. Her
office is that way.
The journalist points, Emma smiles in gratitude, and she and
Jude hurry off in that direction.
INT. NEWS STATION - VANESSA'S OFFICE - MORNING
When Emma and Jude reach Vanessa, she is busy typing at her
computer. Emma knocks on her cubicle and she looks up,
cocking an eyebrow.
VANESSA:
Yes?
EMMA:
Excuse me. Ms. Lowe?
VANESSA:
I'm her. Can I help you?
EMMA:
Uh, yes, actually. You see, my
name is, um, Emma. And this, this
is Jude--
VANESSA:
Sit down, you two. And don't look
so nervous.
Emma and Jude oblige and sit at the two chairs across from
her desk.
EMMA:
Thanks. Okay, well, better make
this quick.
JUDE:
Yeah, security's probably onto us.
Vanessa gives Emma and Jude awkward glances and places her
chin upon her folded hands.
VANESSA:
Quick it is, then. I'm not a
particularly patient person.
EMMA:
I just saw you on t.v. earlier
today. You were attacked, weren't
you?
VANESSA:
(lifting her injured arm)
That's right.
EMMA:
You see, I was attacked last night,
too. They were the same people who
attacked you.
Vanessa scoots forward a little, clearly intrigued.
VANESSA:
I'm listening.
EMMA:
There were three of them. The
little boy had a goblin mask. And
big scissors, I think.
VANESSA:
Shears.
EMMA:
Right. And a man with a goat's
head and a chainsaw. And that doll
woman, she had a really big knife.
VANESSA:
So, what happened? You're alive,
too.
EMMA:
I was lucky. My mom and sister
weren't.
Vanessa's expression softens considerably and she reaches out
and strokes the back of Emma's hand gently.
VANESSA:
I'm deeply sorry for your loss.
Really. I'm doing all that I can
here to--
EMMA:
Do you think that there might be
more?
VANESSA:
More what?
EMMA:
Of those...bad people.
VANESSA:
Why do you ask that? Three is
farfetched enough, isn't it? You
saw my interview. People don't
believe it until it's too late.
Jude nudges Emma.
JUDE:
Tell her about your theory.
EMMA:
Oh, right. Um, do you think it
could be possible that this new
string of murders is related to the
March Massacre? You know, when
those kids were butchered in the
woods outside of town?
VANESSA:
Well, I've had my suspicions...The
trick is getting the police force
to get off their asses and do
anything. I've been investigating
just that, actually; the
correlation. It's funny you
mention it. You're a smart girl.
I think you'll do just fine. But
you better head out, though. Don't
wanna get busted.
Emma nods, Vanessa gives her a business card, and she and
Jude leave through a different elevator from whence they
came. Security enters the news floor a moment too late.
INT. NEWS STATION - ELEVATOR - MORNING
JUDE:
How about that coffee now?
EMMA:
...Okay. But just one.
INT. NINA'S HOUSE - NINA'S ROOM - AFTERNOON
The girls have left and Nina is alone. With a beer in hand,
she plops down on the bed and turns on the television. A
news story about the local murder spree is on.
NEWSCASTER:
...bringing the total death toll to
eleven. Local officials are
currently...
NINA:
Jesus Christ.
Nina turns off the television, clearly disturbed, and grabs
her laptop. She flips it open and plays some loud music
while she logs onto MSN. Downstairs, the front door comes to
a close. Someone is inside but she is oblivious.
EXT. COFFEEHOUSE - PATIO - AFTERNOON
Jude takes a hard drag of his cigarette while Emma drinks an
iced coffee drink. Emma eyes his laptop, which is currently
unused on the table.
EMMA:
Do you mind if I...?
JUDE:
(gesturing)
Please.
EMMA:
Thanks.
Emma grabs Jude's laptop, flips it open, and logs onto MSN.
FOCUS ON the email icon, indicating that she has some new
messages. Just as she prepares to check her email, Nina
instant messages her.
NINA:
Hey! Still angry at me?
EMMA:
I was never angry at you.
NINA:
Prove it!
EMMA:
...How am I supposed to do that?
Suddenly, a prompt pops up willing Emma to engage in webcam
chat. She sighs.
JUDE:
What's up?
EMMA:
Nina. I think she had too much to
drink.
JUDE:
Oh?
EMMA:
Yeah. Just one sec.
Emma accepts the prompt and sees Nina in the little window on
the laptop screen. The loud music Nina is listening to
sounds fuzzy and raucous over the laptop speakers.
NINA:
There you are!
EMMA:
Huh? Nina, I can barely hear you!
Nina waves, clearly drunk. Emma waves back.
NINA:
Where are you?
EMMA:
With Jude...Why?
NINA:
Well, earlier you seemed so--
FOCUS ON Nina through the webcam. A shadow can be seen
growing larger and larger in the background.
EMMA:
Are the girls still there?
NINA:
No. Why?
Emma's eyes widen with horror as Mr. Smiley appears behind
Nina on the webcam, his axe in hand.
EMMA:
Oh, God! Nina, behind you! Get
out of there!
NINA:
What?
Jude scoots closer, watching in disbelief as Nina turns
around and SCREAMS. Mr. Smiley is quickly upon her. Her
room is too small to put up much of a struggle. In the
webcam icon, Mr. Smiley axes her over and over on the bed.
EMMA:
Oh, fuck! Someone, call the
police! They're at the sheriff's
house!
JUDE:
Come on! We can help her!
Jude powers off his computer, not wanting Emma or himself to
witness anymore of the brutality, and they hurry off to his
car.
INT. JUDE'S CAR - AFTERNOON
Jude is driving as fast as he can down the city streets.
Emma is in hysterics in the passenger seat.
EMMA:
It's too late. She's dead.
JUDE:
You don't know that for a fact!
EMMA:
He had a fucking axe, Jude! I
didn't recognize that man from last
night...I...
JUDE:
It's okay. Almost there.
EXT. NINA'S HOUSE - FRONT YARD
Just as Emma and Jude reach Nina's house, two police cars
arrive at the scene. Emma and Jude bound out of the vehicle,
watching in disbelief as Sheriff Wallace, Deputy Chandler,
and a ROOKIE COP approach the house.
DEPUTY CHANDLER:
(to Emma and Jude)
You two, stay back!
Sheriff Wallace and the rookie cop burst through the
partially open front door. Deputy Chandler is close behind.
INT. NINA'S HOUSE - LIVING ROOM - AFTERNOON
Sheriff Wallace bounds up the front stairs. Deputy Chandler
is right on his heels.
SHERIFF WALLACE:
Nina?!
Downstairs, the rookie cop cautiously ventures into the
kitchen with his gun drawn. Emma and Jude stand outside on
the porch, peering inside. Cries of disgust and anguish can
be heard from upstairs and Emma buries her head in her hands.
EMMA:
I knew it! I fucking knew it!
INT. NINA'S HOUSE - NINA'S ROOM - AFTERNOON
Sheriff Wallace is nearly in convulsions, vomiting on the
floor at the grizzly site.
DEPUTY CHANDLER:
Oh, Heath...I'm so sorry...
Nina's bloody corpse is on the bed, her legs together and her
arms apart, in the shape of a cross. She is completely
drenched in blood and part of her face had been bitten off.
Her laptop is at an odd angle by the bed and wall. There is
blood on the screen. Most of the room is soaked with blood
and a grim message in red is written on the wall: REAPERS
WILL EAT YOU.
INT. NINA'S HOUSE - KITCHEN - AFTERNOON
The rookie cop is cautious as he investigates. He sees a
woman's leg disappear around the corner.
ROOKIE COP:
Hey! Ma'am?
The rookie cop follows her but when he approaches the corner,
there is no one there. He looks confused and suddenly he
feels something on the back of his head. It is a gun. The
rookie cop drops his gun in fear and it goes off. Emma and
Jude watch through the open door, trying to see what
happened. The rookie cop is shaking from fear, staring at
Emma and Jude, trying to warn them with his eyes. Suddenly,
another gunshot goes off and the rookie cop's face BLASTS
OFF, spraying blood across the room. Emma SCREAMS and his
corpse falls down, revealing Starlet. Emma screams again and
Jude quickly ushers her out of the building.
INT. NINA'S HOUSE - NINA'S ROOM - AFTERNOON
Sheriff Wallace is still a mess. Hearing the gunshots,
Deputy Chandler hurries down the stairs.
INT. NINA'S HOUSE - STAIRWELL - AFTERNOON
Deputy Chandler sees Starlet and aims her gun.
DEPUTY CHANDLER:
Lower your weapon!
Starlet looks up at Deputy Chandler, tilts her head, and
shoots. The bullet pierces her shoulder and she screams,
flying back. Starlet ascends the stairs, her gun held
forward. Just as she prepares to deliver the killing blow, a
gunshot sounds out and Starlet stops, dropping her gun.
Sheriff Wallace stands further up the stairs, his gun still
smoking.
SHERIFF WALLACE:
Rot in hell, you crazy bitch.
DEPUTY CHANDLER:
Sheriff!
Starlet touches the side of her head as lines of blood begin
to cross across her beautiful Marilyn Monroe mask. She
stumbles a bit and then falls onto the stairwell, mere inches
from Deputy Chandler. Blood begins to pool below her head
SHERIFF WALLACE:
Are you alright?
DEPUTY CHANDLER:
I'll be fine. I think she killed--
Before Deputy Chandler can finish her sentence, she notices a
figure appearing behind Sheriff Wallace. He sees the fear
and confusion on her face.
SHERIFF WALLACE:
What is it?
Suddenly, Mr. Smiley SWINGS his axe down onto the top of
Sheriff Wallace's head and blood sprays everywhere. Deputy
Chandler gives a blood-curdling scream. As soon as Sheriff
Wallace's corpse slumps down, Mr. Smiley heads for Deputy
Chandler. She opens fire, hitting him once in the gut. She
fires again but Mr. Smiley has disappeared back upstairs. By
now, Emma and Jude have returned.
EMMA:
D-Deputy Chandler?! You're hurt!
Emma steps over Starlet's corpse and examines the wound.
DEPUTY CHANDLER:
Cheryl. And get the hell out of
here, the both of you.
Jude rips off his shirt and makes a makeshift tourniquet just
as Emma notices Sheriff Wallace's body. She covers her mouth
in disgust.
JUDE:
Like hell we are!
DEPUTY CHANDLER:
It's not safe. One of them is
still upstairs.
Without thinking, Emma grabs Deputy Chandler's gun and
hurries up the stairs.
JUDE:
Emma!
DEPUTY CHANDLER:
Goddammn hotheaded girl...
Jude helps Deputy Chandler up and they follow Emma.
INT. NINA'S HOUSE - NINA'S ROOM - AFTERNOON
Emma stands, dumbfounded at the gore before her. Once it
finally sinks in she SCREAMS and falls to her knees. Jude
and Deputy Chandler are quickly behind her. Jude covers his
mouth with his arm, clearly disgusted, using his other arm to
gently rub Emma's shoulder. The window is busted open.
DEPUTY CHANDLER:
He's gone...
EXT. FAIRVIEW CITY PARK - EVENING
Emma, Jude, Kate, and Farah all sit on the park bench from
yesterday, watching the lake while passing a joint and a
forty amongst themselves.
JUDE:
What a wild fucking day.
EMMA:
Uh-huh.
KATE:
I just...I can't believe that
Nina's dead...
FARAH:
Well, believe it. It's fact.
KATE:
No need to be a cunt.
FARAH:
I'm not trying to be! Hey, I'm
upset, too, you know?
KATE:
Are you?
FARAH:
Yes! I just struggle with being
open about my feelings.
KATE:
That's just a fancy way for saying
you're a bitch.
FARAH:
What?!
JUDE:
Whoa. Calm down. You two are
friends. We're all sad. Mortified
beyond belief.
EMMA:
Cheryl said that guy had an axe,
right?
JUDE:
Huh? I think so. Why?
EMMA:
And the girl in red with the gun...
JUDE:
That makes five, right?
EMMA:
Well, four now...
KATE:
What are you getting at, exactly?
EMMA:
I think my hunch was right. I
think that these fucking psychos
are the same ones from the March
Massacre.
FARAH:
And?
EMMA:
And...I think they're going to show
up at the party at Riley House.
You know, for a last hurrah or
something...
JUDE:
...You don't actually wanna still
go to that, do you?
EMMA:
Of course not. I just wanna get
the hell out of this awful town.
But I feel like...maybe I could
somehow help...I don't know. It's
stupid.
KATE:
I don't think it's stupid at all.
You're much braver than me, Em.
JUDE:
And me.
FARAH:
...And me.
EMMA:
Can we go together? The four of
us?
KATE:
I'm game. With everything that's
happened, I wouldn't feel any safer
at my house.
FARAH:
Well, that hottie DALTON MEYERS
will be there, so...I guess.
JUDE:
...Alright.
EMMA:
Great. Hey, I'm gonna give Vanessa
a quick call. Give her a head's
up. That means no coughing!
Jude, Kate, and Farah all go into overexaggerated coughing
fits, willing Emma to walk closer to the lake while she dials
Vanessa's number. The moon's reflection is gorgeous.
INT. NEWS STATION - PARKING GARAGE - NIGHT
Vanessa enters the vacant parking garage, making a beeline
for her car. She unlocks it and gets in.
INT. VANESSA'S CAR - NIGHT
As soon as she is in her car, the phone rings, startling her.
VANESSA:
This is Vanessa.
EMMA (V.O.):
Hi, Ms. Lowe. It's Emma. We met
earlier.
VANESSA:
I remember. What's up?
EMMA (V.O.):
A lot, actually. You know how we
talked about there possibly being
more Reapers?
VANESSA:
Reapers?
EMMA (V.O.):
Oh. Yeah, that's what they call
themselves, apparently. Well, I
think there were five of them but
now there's only four.
VANESSA:
Go on.
EMMA (V.O.):
There's a big party tonight at
Riley House to commemorate the six
month anniversary of the March
Massacre. It's just a feeling I
have, but I think they might try to
show up there.
VANESSA:
Interesting. Well, maybe I'll try
and make an appearance, then.
EMMA (V.O.):
Really?
VANESSA:
We'll see.
Vanessa hangs up and then redirects her attention to the
windshield. A slumped figure can be seen moving awkwardly a
few yards in front of her car. Vanessa watches in silence.
She starts her car but just as she does, the figure is
illuminated. It is Mr. Smiley and as if on cue he hurls his
axe forward. Vanessa SCREAMS and ducks just in time as the
axe SMASHES into the windshield, showering her in glass.
Vanessa punches the gas, still leaning down, and her car
launches forward. Once it crashes into a wall, she grabs the
axe and leaves.
INT. NEWS STATION - PARKING GARAGE - NIGHT
Outside, Vanessa can see no sign of Mr. Smiley. With his axe
in hand, she hurries towards the emergency stairwell but
suddenly MR. SMILEY BURSTS OUT from behind a pillar and
KNOCKS HER TO THE FLOOR. Vanessa SCREAMS and the axe goes
sliding. Mr. Smiley gets on top of Vanessa and starts
banging her head into the concrete, but she shoves her
fingers into his stomach wound. He howls in pain, giving
Vanessa the chance to escape his grip. She hurries towards
the axe but he roughly grabs her ankle and she falls down.
VANESSA:
No!
Mr. Smiley steps on her hand, breaking bones. She cries and
Mr. Smiley grabs the axe. He lifts it high in the air, ready
to make the final strike, but Vanessa kicks him in the groin
and he falls to his knees. Vanessa forces herself up and
runs, but Mr. Smiley grabs her and hurls her into the nearby
vent guarding an INDUSTRIAL STEEL FAN. On all fours, Vanessa
is in a daze. The vent is loosened and Mr. Smiley uses his
axe to pry it off from the wall. Vanessa SCREAMS and
struggles as Mr. Smiley lifts her up, forcing her face closer
into the vicious spinning blades. She holds her head back
with all her might but the fan keeps getting closer and
closer. Mr. Smiley is too strong.
VANESSA: (CONT'D)
I'll see you in Hell.
Mr. Smiley shoves Vanessa's face into the industrial steel
fan and it is completely shredded off, spraying Mr. Smiley's
mask with blood. Mr. Smiley throws her body down and then
examines his handiwork, tilting his head to the side.
INT. KATE'S HOUSE - KATE'S ROOM - NIGHT
Emma and Kate are just about finished getting ready for the
party. Emma emerges from the closet and does a little spin,
showing off her short dress.
EMMA:
Are you sure it looks okay?
KATE:
Better than. It looks great on
you.
EMMA:
Really? Thanks again for letting
me borrow clothes for tonight.
KATE:
Don't mention it. Jude will be
here soon, right?
EMMA:
Yeah, he sent a text just a minute
ago. He's on his way. Then we can
pick up Farah at her place and head
to Riley House.
KATE:
I admire you, Em.
EMMA:
Huh?
KATE:
Well, it's just that after
everything you've been through
these past couple of days, you're
still able to move forward. That
must require an incredible amount
of strength.
EMMA:
What's with this, all of the
sudden?
Kate sits down on her bed and sighs. Emma sits beside her,
giving her a concerned look.
KATE:
I'm still struggling with Lucy's
death. I don't even wanna think
about what you're going through.
EMMA:
Kate...
KATE:
You could've died, you know?
You're so brave.
EMMA:
It's not bravery. It's just
something that I feel I have to do.
Personal responsibility, becoming
an adult, that sort of thing.
KATE:
But we're just kids, Emma.
EMMA:
Yeah, well, I can't afford to be
"just a kid" anymore.
KATE:
No, I guess not, huh? I guess I
can't, either.
EMMA:
None of us can. Not with our lives
in danger like this.
KATE:
Are you scared?
EMMA:
Yes. Absolutely. But more than
that, I'm ready for all of this to
just be over with. I want it to be
a distant, awful memory in the back
of my mind, not the main focus of
my life.
KATE:
I bet so.
Suddenly, a familiar chime sounds. Emma looks down at her
phone.
EMMA:
Jude's here. Are you ready?
KATE:
As ready as I'll ever be.
INT. JUDE'S CAR - NIGHT
Emma, Jude, and Kate sit in silence. The car is parked and
they stare outside at Farah's house. Emma checks her phone
obsessively.
JUDE:
Maybe she changed her mind about
going?
EMMA:
Not a chance. I talked to her as
soon as I got to Kate's. What the
hell is taking her so long?
KATE:
Seriously. The two of us got ready
in half the time.
JUDE:
Maybe one of you should try
calling?
EMMA:
I did. No answer.
JUDE:
(while lighting cigarette)
That's weird. Well, I'll give her
a few more minutes and then we're
heading on with or without her.
EMMA:
Fair enough.
FOCUS ON the cigarette as it hits the pavement outside Jude's
car. He has finished it and is clearly ready to go.
JUDE:
Well...
EMMA:
Just one second. I'll drag her
here by her hair if I have to.
KATE:
I'd like to see that.
EXT. FARAH'S HOUSE - FRONT YARD - NIGHT
Emma bounds out of Jude's car and just as she approaches
Farah's massive lawn, the front door of her house opens and
Farah comes out, waving at someone still inside. Then she
closes the door and directs her attention to Emma, who stands
just a little ways from Jude's car. Farah's face lights up
and she hurries over.
FARAH:
Hey! Thanks for waiting.
EMMA:
Sure. What took you so long?
FARAH:
My parents. Sorry.
EMMA:
Forget it. Let's just go.
INT. JUDE'S CAR - NIGHT
Emma and Farah pile back into Jude's car. Kate stares at
Farah for a few moments, obviously annoyed.
JUDE:
Is everything cool?
FARAH:
Absolutely. Thanks for picking me
up, by the way.
JUDE:
Yeah. You bet.
Jude hits the gas and his tires screech as the car shoots
down the street.
INT. MORGUE - NIGHT
Deputy Chandler stands next to a woman clad in medical
scrubs, RHONDA, in the depths of the city morgue. While
Rhonda opens a drawer with a body bag inside, Deputy Chandler
watches. FOCUS ON Rhonda's hand as she unzips the body bag
and a beautiful teenage girl's cold dead face is revealed.
Her blonde hair frames her face, the bullet wound in the side
of her head dark with coagulation.
RHONDA:
Is this really the one?
DEPUTY CHANDLER:
Afraid so.
RHONDA:
But...she's just a kid...
DEPUTY CHANDLER:
Yeah. Kids are capable of anything
these days. A hell of a lot more
than when I was young.
RHONDA:
Do you recognize her?
DEPUTY CHANDLER:
No. I don't think she's from here.
The results won't be back until
early next week, but I'd say she's
no older than seventeen.
RHONDA:
And you said that there
are...others like her?
DEPUTY CHANDLER:
Apparently. They call themselves
"Reapers" and wear masks. They
cannibalize, too.
RHONDA:
(while shutting drawer)
That's scary. I hope none of them
show up at Riley House.
DEPUTY CHANDLER:
Riley House?
RHONDA:
Yeah. There's supposed to be some
big party tonight. Some kind of
anniversary.
The realization flashes in Deputy Chandler's eyes and she
leaves in a hurry.
EXT. RILEY HOUSE - FRONT YARD - NIGHT
Rows of cars line the streets outside Riley House, which sits
where the edge of town meets the forest. The bass from an
impressive sound system is heard as Emma, Jude, Kate, and
Farah make their way towards Riley House. Christmas lights
are strung up in the trees. Crowds of young people move in
and out of the open door. Suddenly, a SCREAM is heard and
Emma stops. A SORORITY GIRL bursts out of the front door, a
FRAT GUY donning a cheap mask and a fake knife chasing her.
SORORITY GIRL:
Help me!
FRAT GUY:
Die! Die! Die!
They laugh and run down the sidewalk, passing Emma and the
others before disappearing into obscurity. Jude leans in
over Emma's shoulder, wrapping his arms around her as they
move up the steps into the house.
JUDE:
Looks like quite a party.
EMMA:
Looks like.
INT. RILEY HOUSE - LIVING ROOM - NIGHT
Dozens of teenagers and college-aged kids are dancing while
strobe lights shoot an array of colors over the walls.
Homemade decorations adorn the walls. Some people are
wearing cheap creepy masks, whereas others have smears of
fake red blood across their clothes. The music is blasting
as Emma and the others weave through the crowds and into the
kitchen.
INT. RILEY HOUSE - KITCHEN - NIGHT
Emma and the others find the kegs and help themselves to some
red plastic cups of beer.
JUDE:
Finally. Nourishment.
KATE:
Yeah, no kidding.
FARAH:
Did you guys see Dalton yet?
EMMA:
Uh. Yeah. Maybe he's one of those
whack-jobs wearing a stupid mask
out on the dance floor?
KATE:
Seems like a fair assessment. He's
a pledge here, right?
FARAH:
I think so.
JUDE:
I need to smoke. I'm gonna head
out back.
EMMA:
I'll come with. Have fun, Farah.
Let me know when you find Dalton.
FARAH:
You're going, too, Kate?
KATE:
Yeah. I can't even hear myself
think in here right now. Be back.
FARAH:
Alright...
Farah watches as Emma, Jude, and Kate disappear behind a
crowd in the kitchen and into the backyard.
EXT. RILEY HOUSE - BACK YARD - NIGHT
The back yard of Riley House is festive with Christmas lights
strung up in the trees, an in-ground swimming pool with
adjoining hot tub, and a blazing bonfire. Emma and Kate are
amazed by the attention to detail and Jude lights a cigarette
while they find a well-lit table under a canopy of tree
branches.
KATE:
Wow. They really went all out,
didn't they?
EMMA:
Yeah. Apparently so.
JUDE:
Are you glad we came?
EMMA:
So far, so good. Things will be
different if the Reapers show up,
though.
JUDE:
No shit.
KATE:
What if they're already here?
EMMA:
Let's just hope they're not.
INT. RILEY HOUSE - LIVING ROOM - NIGHT
Inside, Farah nurses her beer while she works her way through
the crowd of dancing faux killers and faux victims. She
joins in on the dancing, scanning the area for any signs of
Dalton. When a small crowd descends the stairs, she notices
that only one of them has a mask. When he lifts it up to
brush his hair away, she sees that it is Dalton and she
smiles flirtatiously.
EXT. RILEY HOUSE - BACK YARD - NIGHT
Sounds of excitement draw the attention of Emma, Jude, and
Kate. A crowd has gathered near the bonfire. Suddenly, loud
EXPLOSIONS generate, making Emma shriek.
RANDOM CHICK:
Oh, look! Fireworks!
FOCUS ON the bursts of color that shoot up into the air; the
fireworks are lighting up the night sky. Jude wraps his arm
around Emma's shoulders.
KATE:
I'm gonna Bogart another beer. Did
you guys want any?
EMMA:
Not yet.
JUDE:
I'm good.
KATE:
Fair enough. I'll be right back.
INT. RILEY HOUSE - KITCHEN - NIGHT
A sea of people are pouring out through the back door, eager
to see the fireworks. In the kitchen, a big crowd of frat
guys has settled near the kegs. Kate stands a little ways
behind them, rolling her eyes. After checking her phone for
the time, she sighs and disappears into a nearby bathroom.
INT. RILEY HOUSE - BATHROOM - NIGHT
Kate stares at her reflection in the mirror and splashes some
water on her face.
KATE:
Some party.
Suddenly, a muffled cry can be heard from behind. Kate looks
into the mirror; a half-open door behind her where the noise
came from appears to lead into darkness. FOCUS ON the fear
in her eyes as the noise gets louder; a baby is crying.
KATE: (CONT'D)
Who the hell would bring a baby to
a party like this?
Kate slowly pushes the door open and ventures into the room.
INT. RILEY HOUSE - GUEST ROOM - NIGHT
The only light is coming from moonbeams through a window
blanketed with curtains. Kate reaches for a light switch but
the power appears to be cut.
KATE:
Shit.
Kate feels around over a dresser and a bed. The baby cries
seem to be coming from the window.
KATE: (CONT'D)
Are you serious?
Kate approaches the window and draws the curtains. Junior is
STANDING RIGHT OUTSIDE and Kate SCREAMS in horror as he
shoves his hands through the window, SHATTERING IT, grabbing
her by the shoulders. Kate wiggles free and behind her,
BABYDOLL BURSTS OUT OF THE CLOSET, her knife shining from the
moonlight. Kate SCREAMS and makes a beeline for the door but
is TACKLED to the floor by Babydoll. Pinned to the floor,
Kate is helpless and SCREAMS as Junior approaches, drawing
something from his coat; a spinner firecracker. He tilts his
head and looks down at Kate.
KATE: (CONT'D)
Oh, God! Please, don't! I don't
wanna die!
Babydoll backhands Kate and Junior lights the firecracker.
Then he SHOVES IT IN KATE'S MOUTH. Babydoll quickly puts
duck tape over Kate's mouth. In panic mode, Kate manages to
escape from her attackers, smoke emanating from her mouth,
her eyes watering. She tries to rip the duck tape off but
cannot as she runs to the window and crawls out.
EXT. RILEY HOUSE - BACK YARD
Emma and Jude are still sitting outside, enjoying their beers
and watching the fireworks display with other young people.
EMMA:
Kate should've been back by now,
don't you think?
JUDE:
Maybe some guy hit her up inside.
She's pretty cute.
EMMA:
You think so?
JUDE:
Uh...
EMMA:
You're right. Kate is very
beautiful. It's okay. I'm not
that kind of girlfriend.
JUDE:
Lucky me.
Suddenly, a figure is seen running around the corner of the
house into the backyard. She seems frantic.
EMMA:
W-wait...Jude, do you see that?
JUDE:
See what?
EMMA:
Is that Kate?
JUDE:
Where?
EMMA:
Oh, fuck, it is Kate!
Emma stands up and Jude follows suit. Emma points and
SCREAMS as Kate runs forward towards the crowd. FOCUS ON
Kate as she finally pulls the duck tape from her mouth just
as the firecracker in her mouth EXPLODES, RIPPING OFF HER JAW
and shooting streams of blood and colorful light into the
crowd of onlookers. Chaos ensues and Emma SCREAMS IN HORROR
AND DISGUST as the partiers make a mad dash towards the
house, desperate to escape.
INT. RILEY HOUSE - BEDROOM - NIGHT
Farah and Dalton have just finished having sex. They lie
together in bed. Dalton is smoking a joint and offers a hit
to Farah. She obliges.
FARAH:
Thanks.
DALTON:
You were pretty amazing.
FARAH:
Just pretty?
DALTON:
No. You were great. I think I
came like three times!
FARAH:
I'm happy for you.
DALTON:
What? Didn't you get off, too?
FARAH:
Yeah. You were like a jack rabbit.
Dalton scoffs, taking the joint back from Farah. He appears
to be hurt.
FARAH: (CONT'D)
What, did I offend you?
DALTON:
I've been around. Girls are
usually more appreciative.
FARAH:
Appreciative? Look at me. I
could've shagged any dude at this
party. I wanted you. Does that
not say anything?
DALTON:
...I guess. Sorry to be a douche.
Dalton hands Farah the joint but she will not take it. She
stands up, gathering her clothes from the floor.
FARAH:
Don't even worry about it. Really.
DALTON:
What? You're leaving?
FARAH:
Yeah. I came with friends. I've
ditched them long enough. They're
probably bored out of their minds!
Dalton stands up, gathering his clothes from the floor. He
and Farah begin to get dressed.
DALTON:
What are you saying? This party is
banging.
FARAH:
Banging? People still say that?
DALTON:
Hey, fuck you.
FARAH:
Been there, done that. You're so
cute, Dalton. Let's do it again
sometime, okay?
Suddenly, loud SCREAMS from outside fill the room. Farah and
Dalton exchange confused glances.
DALTON:
What the fuck is that all about?
Did something happen?
FARAH:
No clue.
Farah walks over to the window as she puts the rest of her
clothes back on. FOCUS ON the crowd of screaming kids as
they flee the party in horror.
FARAH: (CONT'D)
Everyone's leaving...
DALTON:
No shit?
FARAH:
No shit.
DALTON:
What in the hell for?
Before Farah has a chance to answer, the door BURSTS open and
a CHAINSAW ROARS TO LIFE. Farah SCREAMS. Dalton turns
around just in time as GOATHEAD BRINGS HIS CHAINSAW DOWN into
his head, splitting his skull in half vertically, spraying
Farah and the rest of the room with copious amounts of blood.
Dalton's corpse falls to the floor. Farah SCREAMS again and
sprints to the balcony.
EXT. RILEY HOUSE - BALCONY - NIGHT
Farah emerges on the balcony, drenched in blood. PAN ACROSS
the skyline of trees and buildings as she rushes towards the
railing. She peers down. She is far too high in the air to
risk jumping down.
FARAH:
Oh, fuck!
Farah leans over the railing, looking down at the youths as
they flee to their cars and the distance in a panic. She
SCREAMS out for help, but no one gives her a second thought.
FARAH: (CONT'D)
Hey! Help me! Please! Up here!
I'm on the balcony! What the fuck
are you people doing down there?!
I'm in danger!
Suddenly, Goathead BURSTS onto the balcony, his chainsaw
roaring louder than ever. Farah turns around and SCREAMS,
guarding her face with her arm. Then she hears muffled cries
from the ground below.
DEPUTY CHANDLER:
Get down!
Farah falls to the floor and gun shots ring out. Farah
guards her face and when she looks again, Goathead is nowhere
in sight.
EXT. RILEY HOUSE - FRONT YARD - NIGHT
Emma and Jude emerge from Riley House amongst the other
panicked teens. Emma is fumbling with her cell phone while
Jude tries to escort her to his car.
EMMA:
Shit. Farah's not answering.
JUDE:
It's cool. Forget it. She must've
gotten a ride with Dalton or
someone.
EMMA:
Jude, I...I can't go...
JUDE:
What?
Emma hears someone calling to her. It is Deputy Chandler.
She runs up the sidewalk to join Emma and Jude.
DEPUTY CHANDLER:
What the fuck is going on here?
EMMA:
Cheryl! It's you!
DEPUTY CHANDLER:
I saw an animal man on the balcony.
What was that all about?
JUDE:
Animal man?
EMMA:
What are you talking about?
DEPUTY CHANDLER:
(pointing)
Up there. Some man who looked like
a goat was about to kill a girl
with a chainsaw.
Emma and Jude look up to the balcony but Farah is nowhere to
be seen.
EMMA:
Goathead. He's with the Reapers.
What did the girl look like?
DEPUTY CHANDLER:
Blonde. Attractive. She was in a
slinky red dress. A small thing,
maybe a hundred pounds.
JUDE:
Wasn't Farah wearing red?
EMMA:
It could've been her. God. First
my family, then Kate, and now
this...
DEPUTY CHANDLER:
I radioed for backup but chances
are we're on our own for the night.
You know, with the police force
dwindling to nothing in a matter of
two days and all.
JUDE:
How are we supposed to do all of
this by ourselves?
DEPUTY CHANDLER:
I don't have the slightest idea.
All I can say is to trust your
instincts and keep a level head.
The FBI won't touch this case until
Monday morning. The whole town
will be swarming with them by then.
EMMA:
But it's only Saturday, for fuck's
sake! What do we do until then?
DEPUTY CHANDLER:
Try to survive. Gotta go.
Deputy Chandler then ventures into Riley House alone with her
gun armed. Emma runs after her.
JUDE:
Emma! Shit, why is she like this?
Jude follows with some hesitation.
INT. RILEY HOUSE - LIVING ROOM - NIGHT
In the living room, Deputy Chandler aims her gun carefully as
she scouts the area. She approaches the staircase but a loud
RUMBLING startles her as Emma appears behind her.
DEPUTY CHANDLER:
Don't make a sound.
Emma stops dead in her tracks. Suddenly, Farah appears at
the top of the stairs.
FARAH:
You saved me, didn't you?
Farah rushes down the stairs and startles Deputy Chandler
with a warm embrace.
DEPUTY CHANDLER:
Huh?
FARAH:
I'd be dead if it weren't for you.
Thank you. I was so scared.
Deputy Chandler half-heartedly hugs Farah back and then backs
up, drawing her gun close.
DEPUTY CHANDLER:
You should leave. It's not safe
here.
EMMA:
Farah!
Farah and Emma are quick to embrace, hugging each other for
comfort.
FARAH:
Oh, Em, I was so afraid. A man
with a chainsaw tried to...
EMMA:
I know. He killed my sister.
FARAH:
What do we do now, Emma?
Jude appears in the living room just as loud SCREAMS emanate
from the back yard. FOCUS ON everyone's concerned facial
expression.
DEPUTY CHANDLER:
You kids better leave while you
still have the chance!
Then Deputy Chandler disappears into the distance.
EXT. RILEY HOUSE - BACK YARD - NIGHT
In the backyard, BABYDOLL and JUNIOR have taken to gutting
the last remaining youths, stabbing them relentlessly. The
grass in the yard is stained with blood. Deputy Chandler
opens fire and Babydoll quickly vanishes. Junior stops,
looks at Deputy Chandler, and tilts his head. He cries like
a baby. Soon Emma, Farah, and Jude appear behind her.
EMMA:
Cheryl! Watch out!
Deputy Chandler turns around, giving Emma a knowing look.
Suddenly, Junior makes a mad dash for Deputy Chandler.
JUDE:
Deputy! Behind you!
It is too late. Junior has grabbed Deputy Chandler and they
briefly struggle. Junior manages to stab Deputy Chandler and
she SCREAMS as she is shoved into the blazing bonfire. She
drags Junior in with her. Emma, Farah, and Jude watch in
terror as Deputy Chandler flees from the bonfire, her body
completely ablaze.
DEPUTY CHANDLER:
Please help me!
Deputy Chandler tries to run across the yard to the pool,
leaving flaming foot prints, but she falls to the ground and
the flames roast her dead body. Emma, Farah, and Jude stand
together, dumbfounded. Junior and Deputy Chandler are both
dead. They stand alone in the back yard.
FARAH:
She's dead...
EMMA:
I can't believe it.
JUDE:
Let's go. There's nothing for us
here.
FOCUS ON Farah's eyes as she notices something in the trees;
soon an army of bodies descend from the tree branches with
ropes wrapped around their throats. The bodies are all of
young people, gutted, their blood staining the grass. Farah
lets loose an UNNATURAL SCREAM as a CHAINSAW ROARS to life.
Goathead emerges from the back door. Emma grabs Farah by the
hand, pleading with her.
EMMA:
We have to go! Now!
But Farah is too distressed, the tears pouring as she notices
friends and classmates amongst the victims. Soon Goathead is
upon them.
JUDE:
Let's go!
Then Emma, Farah, and Jude hurry across the vast backyard and
into the adjoining woods.
EXT. WOODS - NIGHT
Emma, Farah, and Jude run through the dark forest as quickly
as they can. Along the way, Farah falls down over a tree
branch and pleads with her friends.
FARAH:
Please! Help me!
Then the sound of TERRIFIED SCREAMS and a CHAINSAW are meshed
together in a horiffic way. Emma and Jude know that Farah is
dead and that Goathead is after them. Emma begins to cry.
JUDE:
Come on!
Suddenly, Jude is thrown to the ground. Babydoll has tackled
him and laughs as she straddles him, her huge butcher's knife
shining in the dim moonlight as she raises it high in the
air. But Emma appears and smashes a huge rock into
Babydoll's head once. Twice. Emma crunches Babydoll's skull
over and over until she is assuredly dead.
EMMA:
Just die! Just fucking die!
Jude stands and draws Emma away from the violence, embracing
her in a grove of trees.
JUDE:
It's okay. Babe, it's okay.
Really. It'll all work out
somehow. I promise. I love you so
much. Just believe in that. You
have to believe in that. Plea--
A strange whooshing noise sounds out. Jude whimpers. FOCUS
ON Emma's eyes as she realizes that it is Jude's corpse
dangling in her arms. An axe is deeply lodged in his back.
Emma SCREAMS as Jude's dead body falls to the forest floor
and MR. SMILEY STANDS IN HIS PLACE. She SCREAMS again and
runs into the woods. Mr. Smiley withdraws his axe from
Jude's back and hacks at his corpse over and over again.
FLASH CUT to Emma running through the forest until she
reaches a clearing in the woods. A farmhouse with a farm and
cornfield is in the distance. Emma wiggles through a barbed
wire fence JUST AS MR. SMILEY SWINGS HIS AXE at her, cutting
through the fence. Emma SCREAMS and disappears into the
cornfield.
EXT. CORNFIELD - NIGHT
Emma rushes through the cornfield and manages to emerge on
the other side just as Mr. Smiley appears behind her, his axe
raised high. She SCREAMS and rushes up to the farmhouse.
Mr. Smiley, though wounded from the gunshot he endured
earlier that day, is hot on her trail. Emma tries the doors
but they are locked and she BURSTS through a window.
INT. FARMHOUSE - KITCHEN - NIGHT
Emma grabs the biggest knife she can find and when Mr. Smiley
BURSTS through the same window she used, she lodges it deep
in his chest. He drops his axe, struggles, and falls dead.
Emma laughs and wanders outside, sitting on the porch.
EXT. FARMHOUSE - PORCH - NIGHT
EMMA:
I can't believe it. I can't
believe that I...
Suddenly, Goathead BURSTS through the front door behind her
and EMMA SCREAMS. His chainsaw is SO LOUD and Emma runs.
EXT. WILDERNESS - NIGHT
Emma runs through the vast wilderness as quickly as she can
until she winds up on the highway. She waves her arms
desperately as a car passes, indifferent. She runs along the
street, screaming and waving her arms and finally, a truck
stops for her.
WOMAN:
Are you okay, Ma'am?
EMMA:
Keep going!
Emma leaps into the bed of the truck and soon Goathead BURSTS
from the woods, scraping the sides of the truck with his
massive chainsaw. Emma SCREAMS.
WOMAN:
Oh, shit! What was that?
EMMA:
Just drive! Faster! Faster!
Faster! Faster!
Goathead keeps running, slashing at the bed of the truck,
desperate to kill Emma. She keeps SCREAMING in pure horror.
FOCUS ON THE MOON as Emma sits back in the bed of the truck,
laughing and crying simultaneously as she watches Goathead
standing in the middle of the road, slashing his massive
chainsaw through the air.
WOMAN:
What the hell happened out here?!
EMMA:
I'm alive...I'm alive...I'm
alive...
Emma laughs and watches the vast night sky as it passes high
above her, a chainsaw roaring faintly in the distance. FLASH
CUT to a black screen.
